Going to start loading for this chambering, I see Midway carries A Square ($43/20pcs.) at almost twice the price of the Weatherby brass ($24/20).

Is anybody else making quality brass for the 338-06? At this stage in the game I don't want to get involved with necking up 30.06 brass. or 35 Whelen down.

Thanks, Rob

Necking up .30-06 brass is no harder than resizing .338-06 brass. It's that easy.

If you must have factory brass then the weatherby or Norma, who makes the weatherby brass, is the way to go.

Thanks, as I said I'm new to the game and didn't realize it was that easy.

Thanks, Rob

Seriously, its real easy. You would litterally run the .30-06 brass into the .338-06 sizing die. The amount you have to expand the neck is so little that brass loss, at least for me, has been zero and I've formed darn near 2000 pieces this way. Just be sure to lube the inside of the neck or use a carbide expander ball.

While norma brass is stellar, it is also expensive. I had tons of '06 brass so the choice was simple for me.

If you decide to use Norma brass it will last you a good long while.

Best of luck and enjoy that .338-06, one of my personal favorites.

Don''t forget to put some graphite in the neck prior to expanding it, as it will slide a lot better.

Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

I've gotten into the habit of using Imperial wax on the case body, keeping it off the shoulder, then dipping the neck in a tin of graphite for sizing. That graphite sure eases the strain on the neck part of the sizing.

I have both the Weatherby 338-06 brass(made by Norma and very high quality) and neck expanded R-P 30-06 nickel plated brass. The necked down 35 Whelen does not look as neat a job at the base of the neck so using the 30-06 seems to be the ticket. I got the Weatherby brass just in case I decide to use it in Africa and the proper headstamp is required in most of Africa. The price is not that bad really when you consider who makes it.
