I posted earlier about finding a powder for some heavy 12 gauge field loads.

Well, according to Hodgdon's website, their LONGSHOT powder will cover everything from 1 1/8 oz. all the way up to 1 1/2 oz!

The best part... the velocities are markedly higher than any other powders that I've used (I really like Winchester's Super Field too).

Their load data using the Winchester AA hulls is comprehensive and leaves plenty of room for experimentation with different charges, velocities, wads, primers, etc. Shouldn't be hard to find the right combination of power and pattern.

Just thought I'd pass it on!

I have tested long shot. It gets great velocity but with a price. Every load was fast and kicked like a mule. To be honest I don't think a guy need more than 1300 fps. Ron

I use it on a few loads, but like Ron said, anything over 1300 fps is wasted. With larger shot, anything over 1150 is really not needed. But, for 1-1/4 chicken loads, it works great! FWIW, Dutch.

I agree with both "Ida-hos" (sorry, I couldn't resist). Ultra-high velocities aren't totally necessary. However, I personally like the simplicity of buying a large uniform lot of powder to use with everything from 1 1/8 oz. loads up to heavy 1 1/2 ouncers.

The option of being able to produce high velocities is a definite bonus as well. I don't kill much clay... mainly birds, so recoil isn't a problem. Mileage may vary.

Most importantly... Thank you for your love and support throughout my hunting addiction and hopeless recovery! [Big Grin] .

I just do overload experiments in pistols.
I was using 20 gr. LONGSHOT in 9x23mm with 158 gr. last year. It took triple compression to get that much to fit. I was also using it in 10 mm. Eventually I learned that I could get more velocity with Power Pistol.

The LONGSHOT pistol loads in the "2001 Hodgdon Basic Reloader's Manual" have mostly disappeared from the Hodgdon publications and web site.

Longshot is VERY effective in the 40 S&W without compression. 1350 fps with 155 gr Gold Dots at safe pressures, but you need a heavier recoil spring to shoot it on a regular basis.

Also, it can't be beat for loading for short bbl snubbies, its 20% more potent than Blue Dot and much denser. Very little flash.

LONGSHOT is #3 in velocity in my overlad experiments with 40 S&W and 200 gr bullets:

1) 800X IMR load [current web site]: "Hi-Shor"800-X 6.3 gr. 925 fps, 2610
psi, 4" barrel, 1.125" OAL, Speer 200 gr. FMJ

12.5 gr. and more requires double compression, 15.5 gr. the OAL springs
out to 1.171", 15.5 gr. is ok, intense recoil +146% extra powder

2) Power Pistol Alliant load [current web site]: Power Pistol 6.3 gr.,
960 fps, 33,700 psi, 1.130", 4"

13.5 gr. OAL springs out to 1.147",12.5 gr. and the prime fell out.
Intense recoil, +98% extra powder

3) LONGSHOT "Hodgdon Basic Reloader's Manual 2002": LONGSHOT 6.0 gr.,
1.125", 4", 200 gr. HDY XTP, 954 fps, 32,500 psi

At 12 gr. the OAL springs out to 1.160", 12 gr. blew a small hole in case.
Looks like extractor pulled head loose from weld to case body, +100% extra powder

4) 3N37 Vihtavuori load [current web site]: 3N37 6 gr., 988 fps, Speer
200 gr. TMJ, 1.126", 5.5"

9 gr. the OAL springs out to 1.158", 9 gr. is ok, +42% extra powder

5) Blue Dot Alliant load [current web site]: Blue Dot 7.9 gr., 960 fps,
33,800 psi, 1.130", 4"

11.5 gr. OAL springs out to 1.162", 11.5 gr. is ok, 42% extra powder

6) N105 Vihtavuori load [current web site]: N105 8 gr., 1132 fps, Speer
200 gr. TMJ, 1.126", 5.5"

At 10.5 gr. the OAL springs out to 1.169",10.5 gr. wimpy recoil, +31% extra powder.
