ScottS500 A Square Load Help
Has anyone loaded the 440gr Woodleigh soft point in the 500 A Square? I am thinking this would be a great North American bullet loaded to say 2500 fps.
Thanks

Woodleigh only reccomends 2000 FPS max.

ScottSI am aware of Woodleigh's recommendations. However, the trajectory at 2000 fps sucks! At 2500 fps I can get descent range. The plan was/is to use this load for elk and such. Do you think that this would be a problem with that bullet at that velocity?
Thanks

And to think I thought my 375 H&H was overkill on elk.

jeffeossoScott,
please stop baiting people on your 500 A2 and knowledge of reloading. Take you 570 load and work up.
of COURSE there's a problem with a 2000FPS bullet with an impact speed higher... bullet failure is the problem.

Jeffe,
Is that really Axel?
Judy?
POSeur?
Does seem like a pretty silly question. Very like

jeffeossoRon,
Scott Sweet, Axel, 500AHR, Judy, Axel, Posuer, Teg, Sniperinthegrassyknoll, and probably 10 I didn't bother "hunting"...
Yeah, it's Scott "i had a 500AHR but had to sell it without shooting it" Troll.

Idaho SharpshooterI know this is a rather simplistic answer, but that's what you get after I've spent 4-5 hours trudging up and down the aisles at the Boise gunshow all day. Just keep tipping the powder can until you get the MV you want and then shoot it into a bundle of soggy phonebooks separated by 1-inch sheets of plywood? They are passing out new books here, so I can load up again for testing.
regards,
Rich

RIPScott,
If you are serious, you better get some of GSC's 450 grain HV's for your 500A2 and tip the powder can, as Rich says, until you get an MV of 2789.666 fps.
That will flatten the trajectory considerably, especially with an aerodynamic, hollow point, boat tail, monometal bullet that can tolerate impact at 25 yards or 500 yards.
You will then have the ultimate African Sheep Rifle (ASR), thus a fully qualified DGR-ASR.
This would be a perfect use for the .510 Kayser Express also.
However the 500 Mbogo throat may be too long for the short bullet. I wouldn't want to torch the throat with a short bullet that won't seal the bore before the full diameter shank portion clears the case mouth.

ScottSWhat powder would you recommend?

I would start with 115 grains of RL-15 or Varget Extreme and work up.
The discontinued RL-12 would have been perfect.
Maybe you could blend RL-7 and RL-15 for excitement.

But hey, there is now RL-10. Why don't you try that and enlighten us. I have never tried that one.
What do the AccuLoad and QuickLoad programs say?

Rip.,
if you recall correctly, he wrote his own problem to predict loads.. and it was "far more accurate that anything commerically available" .. that's how he get 2150+FPS with a 405 winchester!! in a LEVER gun....
And, of course, he certainly knows his 1/2"+ big bores, if you can believe his postings

Besides, does a guy that can make THIS post seem like someone that needs SD explained to him? He's baiting people

While I am waiting for you to explain why the Taylor knock down number doesn't apply to a 12 gauge slug gun, I though I might take the time to explain to you the REAL reason that the 12 gauge slug doesn't penetrate as well as the 45-70 does , even though Taylor's knock down number says that the 12 gauge is a much better choice.
Remember my earlier statements about momentum density, well here are the momentum densities for a few loads:
500 Jeffery Improved shooting 570gr Woodleigh solid at 2480 fps - 368.4 lb/in sec. Typical penetration ~ 7' of bison skull and body (essentially complete pass through). Taylor knock down number - 102
405 Winchester shooting a 400 grain Woodleigh at 2100 fps - 337.1 lb/in sec. Should penetrate ~ 60" of bison skull and shoulder. Taylor knock down number - 49
45-70 shooting a 400 grain HC at 2150 fps - 277.9 lb/in sec. Should penetrate ~ 25" of bison skull and shoulder, or several feet of venison. Taylor knock down number - 56
50 BMG API military load - 536.5 lb/in sec. Typical penetration ~ 1" mild steel plate at 100 yards. Taylor knock down number - 149
12 gauge slug - 550 grains at 1600 fps - 112.9 lb/in sec. Typical penetration ~ 9 in of venison. Taylor knock down number - 91
22 Long Rifle shooting 36 grain bullet at 1740 fps - 24 lb/in sec. Typical penetration ~ 3.5" of rabbit. Taylor knock down number - 1
Still waiting for your explanation. Is the 12 gauge shotgun slug a better killer than 3 of the five cartridge/bullet combinations listed above?
Scott
By the way, I am not bent out of shape. I am just pointing out the fact that you are full of, well "point of view".

RIPJeffe,
Excuse me from this discussion please.

ScottSDr Berry,
Thank you sir! I'll give that Rel 10 a try, what do you think start out at ~ 105 gr and work up?
