Reloading the 340 Weatherby Mag

Suggestions from 340 Weatherby mag reloaders to get the best accuracy? I just reloaded my first loads and not real happy with results. I used 250 grain Hornady RN bullets, H4350 powder, Weatherby brass and CCI LR mag primers. Groups were wide apart at 100 yards. I wanted H4831 powder and Federal primers but the store was out. If I understand it correctly, in a Weatherby the bullet has a jump before it contacts the rifling. Will this have an effect on accuracy? Suggestions?

I've had good luck with Reloader 22 with 200 grain bullets and Reloader 25 for 250 grainers.

In the grand scheme of things, I think that the Weatherby throat lags in importance behind a bunch of things, such as muzzle crown, trigger, bedding and how hard the shooter jerks the trigger.

I would hope to get it down to an inch and a half or less with a little fiddling with the loads.

Go back to the store and see if they can get you some other components to try.

The 340 Weatherby can be made to shoot usually. The Weatherby rifles do indeed have a freebore or long throat.
It generally does not hamper accuracy to any great degree.
Weatherby's were not designed for bench rest competition, they shoot plenty good for hunting. The two rifles I own that are chambered in Weatherby cartridges both shoot three shot groups under an inch. I just load my cartridges as long as my magazine will allow and call it good.

My dad shoots a 340 Weatherby. I am not sure of the exact charge, but he shoots 210 Nosler Partitions loaded over RL 22, sparked by a Fed 215 primer. He gets some pretty darned nice groups out of his. I saw him shoot a nice bull elk last fall at over 400 yards.

Just try some other combinations, something will probably work for you.

Good luck on your load developement.

My magic powder for my .340 is RL-19 with Fed 215M primers. I use 240 grain North Fork bullets exclusively when I am hunting, anything when targeting. Good luck and good shooting.

I reload for several of the Weatherby's. We are able to get sub 1" groups out of all. There could be several issues in dealing with the accuracy problem which could concern the rifle, as noted. Before we go there may be you could provide some more information.

1) What model rifle is it ie Accumark, Mark V, etc?
2) What will you be using the rifle for ie type of hunting, etc.

I have had great success using the Barnes Triple Shocks in the Weatherby cartridges, Federal 215 Match Grade Primer, Retumbo, 4831sc, RL 22 and 25.
