Reloading using Drill Press

Hi All,

I found a great deal yesterday on a free-standing drill press, thinking I could save some time with a few reloading steps, plus use it for other things (like drilling holes

My main question is what brand/model of case trimmer can be interfaced to a drill press? How do you securely hold the case and control the resulting OAL?

The slowest speed this thing will turn is 250 RPM - is that acceptable?

So far I can think of case trimming, neck brushing, and possibly primer pocket uniforming/flash hole deburring. Do you guys use a drill press for anything else related to reloading?

Thanks.

I use a LEE trimmer with an electric hand drill attachment to trim all of my cases. If your drill press has a 1/2 in chuck, you could insert the cutter head with its case length gauge into the chuck. Then clamp the lock stud and shellholder into a floating drill press vise. Screw down the shellholder on an empty case, position it under the case length gauge, turn on the drill press, then lower into the case till the tip of the gauge hits bottom and your done. Come to think of it, you could reverse the tools and accomplish the same thing. The LEE setup would eliminate the need for precise depth setup. Its also the cheapest!
I think I would chamfer by hand-not enough control with the drill press. My low speed seting on my portable dril is 250 RPM and it does just fine.

By all means, with the Lee, chuck the cutter; you can leave it running.
You can chuck up a shotgun crimp starter, stuff it with steel wool and deburr/polish trimmed case mouths.
In extremis, you can prime on the drill press, but leave it off. I chuck up a duplex 8d scaffolding nail to drive the primer in. Clamp a dowell centered under the chuck to drop the case over.
Roll crimping paper shotshells was routinely done on the drill press.
I've never seated bullets on the drill press ... yet.

killsoft, MidwayUSA sells an dedurring power tool adapter. I made mine. I use it chucked in a variable speed drill mounted in a holder and it works great. It turns very slow tho. It also works real good with the flash hole uniformer and primer pocket cleaner.

Forster and Lyman make drill press mounted trimmers. It is best to use a machinist's cross slide vice to allow for exact centering.
I use the Lyman model and it works great, just make sure that you get the carbide cutter.
