I noticed I have an almost full can sitting on the shelf dated 1996. (I always mark my powder with a sharpies when I buy it).
Tell me any pet accuracy loads you've used with it in these calibers. Velocity isn't important as where I hunt whitetail the shots are rarely further than 100yds.

I have the following calibers--45-70, 243, 25-06, .308, 30-06, .270 win.

Reduced low velocity loads that have been accurate are also interesting!!

Thanks for your input!!

That's my favorite powder. Well maybe another keg of 4831 at $.60 a pound would get my attention too.

I use it in my 6 MM Int' and .358 Win and for a reduced load in the 30/06. It's my primary powder in the .308 Win. In the .375 H&H is just right for cast bullets at 2200 fps

Yep it's my favorite.

I shot a couple of deer with the 150 Corelokt and 42 grs of 3031. It's a accurate load. I think I am up to 43 grs now. Check that. The max here in the old Speer I have open says 44 grs and max is max. Medium burning powders are not the ones to try to see how hot you can go. What they do best is make accurate, reliable low recoil loads.

In the 30/06 I have loaded 46 grs and the 125 gr bullet for a low recoil load for my late dad who not only had arthritis but hunted til he was 80 and that load is accurate and has enough power for deer sized game.

Wait for Green 788 to get in on this. You will find that IMR 3031 is now one of the most overlooked powders that still produces very accurate loads.

Data for this powder is at www.imrpowder.com/rifle.html

IMR 3031...best powder in the world!!

Its perfect for your 45-70. Right now, I am shooting it at 50 grs. under a Rem 405, 50 grs. under a Lyman 292 gr cast out of a Winchester 1886. It'll work good out of the Marlin, the Ruger No. 1 and Browning 78/1885, but don't use it in the Trapdoor or Remington No. 1. For those you gotta go a lot lighter.

I can't remember the load off the top of my head....but I load IMR-3031 for my .45-70's with the 400 gr Speer. In my Ruger #1 I was getting sob MOA(!) and close to 1950fps. I also load it for my .45-70 Guide gun.

Try working up to 50 grs (MAX!) in your 270 with the 110 Sierra. It is a little hard on the eating meat, but gives 3380fps in my 24" 700KS, with .700 groups. Stoney

The following are OCW load recipes, and I will just about guarantee you that these will shoot very well in your .243 win.

60 grain Sierra Varminter
or
58 grain Hornady VMAX
and
39.8 grains of IMR 3031
(Seat to an OAL of 2.600" MAX, no longer)

75 grain Hornady VMAX
and
39.0 grains of IMR 3031
(OAL of 2.705" will do it)

If your rifle won't shoot the above recipes well, I would suspect a rifle integrity problem. (Laugh if you want to, but try the loads and bring me accolades or crow after you've tried them! [Big Grin] )

By the way, IMR 3031 is the ultimate powder for 80 grain and lighter bullets in the .243 win. Hodgdon has nothing in this burn range, nor does any other powder maker I'm familiar with. If you'll try my recipes you'll be buying more IMR 3031, I feel sure [Wink] ...

What kind of .45/70 do you have? 3031 is a great powder for use in the .45/70. A good old standard load for ones with the strength of the 1886 Win. is 53 grains of it with 400-405 grain bullets. I have used up to 60 grains of it with the Barnes Original 400-grain semispitzer, IN A RUGER NO. 1.45/70. There are even loads using 3031 that are mild enough for use in the Trapdoor Springfield. (47.6 grains of 3031 with a Hornady 300 grain bullet, 1600 FPS in a 30" Trapdoor Springfield. Hornady load.)

Kraky,
My late Uncle a Professional GunSmith started me out on IMR 3031. I kill my first deer at the age of 8 years old. Now I'm just a young 56 year old kid.

He would load me up 110 grain bullet with 47 grains of powder. The bullet was a spilter tip, cannot remember the bullet manufacture back that far.
I still use the same Win, Model 70, pre-64, 30-60 he gave me for my 8th birthday. I have my bullets set .012 off the rifling. Now I still use IMR 3031 powder, 165 gr bullet, 46 grains of powder. Bullets, Speer Grand Slam and Nosler Blastic tip. The only other IMR powder I use is IMR 4895 with 180 grain, 47 grains of powder, same bullets manufacture, when I go elk hunting. However in early years of my youth we used IMR 3031 for elk and brough home the bacon.... [Smile] [Razz]

Don't have the exact load handy but I had a reduced .270 load that was very nice -- 150-gr. Ballistic Tip around 2400-2500 fps with a load of 3031 in the 40-41 gr. range, I believe.

Thanks for all the replies guys--keep em coming if you have more info.
My 45-70 is a marlin and I remember trying 3031 but whatever I tried didn't seem accurate and left alot of unburned powder in the barrel. I'll check my records.
I guess if I want to experiment a little I'll just have to do it. If I'm looking for some reduced loads I'll just use minimum book loads and see how they shoot. If hodgden says it's ok to reduce h4895 by up to 40% and it's a slower powder than 3031 then I feel confident doing much the same with 3031 but, would still use book published loads.
AGAIN--THANKS FOR YOUR HELP--if anyone has loads to relate I'd appreciate it!!

When I load 3031 in the .375 H&H with cast bullets I use a small tuft of kapox to hold the powder against the primer. I also use magnum primers with reduced loads for better ignition.

Sounds like a perfect excuse to buy that 30-30 contender barrel you've always been wondering about! Great powder for the 30-30 with all bullet weights, cast and jacketed.

reward yourself,

Kraky, I get an honest 1" at 100 yd with 54gr 3031 and the Hornady & Sierra 300 gr HP in my Marlin 45-70. I think if I had to choose only one DuPont/IMR powder, it would be 3031. Just too many applications, and though not optimum for everything, it is accurate & clean burning in all my loads.

kraky Try 39.5 gr. of IMR 3031 with a 165 Sierra HPBT Gameking. If that does not shoot small groups in your 308 WCF throw it in the garbage and order another rifle. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
