Quote: You did kill your deer but given that you didn't expect to even hit anywhere near it,the decision to take the shot may not have been the correct decision to make.I have no problem with people taking long shots at game if they are confident that they can place their bullet properly, but this was clearly not the case in this situation. In this situation the odds of a wounded deer were extremely high.

Hey Steve, Yes, that is what I was thinking. Over many years we've taken a lot of young folks and turned them into people anyone would be proud to hunt with. Some of them made mistakes along the way, as we all did. The trick is to let the person know he has in fact made an error without turning him off to hearing how it should have been done. If he is still reading this thread, and he wants to be a proficient marksman at those distances, there are ways to go about it. Lots of Long Distance Threads here and elsewhere to guide a person. As he learns about what it really takes to "repeat" that Long Distance shot, "with confidence", it will become self-evident to him why everyone is all upset. But, no one can make him do it. He has to want to do it by accepting the chastising, learning from it and moving ahead in the right direction. Best of luck to all you folks.

Oh my! You certainly have taken a lot of heat here. Any of us normal people who have hunted young have pulled a few boners and some not so young. Take out of this thread what you can as "helpful" unsugared criticism. Heck, you never can tell; you also may hunt long enough to become a bonified hard ass some day. roger
