recently picked up a really nice old M81 woodsmaster in this chambering (except for 4 holes for sidemount) just because i'd never had one and they're really interesting, from back when remington didn't make guns out of stampings from used beer cans. trying to put together some ammo and checking my reloading manuals, the data is all over the place. i usually like to find at least 2 that agree. with a few powders the speer and i believe hodgdon manuals are close as is an old lyman i don't trust a lot. is this round difficult to load for? i notice alliant has dropped its data off their site and in other manuals, some cite Re12 and some Re15.

was trying to find a common powder that would work well - not be optimum, i don't care about max velocities - for the 300 with 150 grain bullets and 8x57 with 175. IMR 4064 looks promising, certainly adequate for both. any experience to back this up?

Willmckee, After looking in a few books it does look like IMR 4064 is a pretty good choice for both! Of coarse one wouldn,t want to load to hot for the 300 sav anyway while using it in that Model 81. Good Loading van

Hodgdon's Varget is a good choice as well. S40

thanks; will look into that one too. i'm not a velocity fiend. all i want out of reloads are accurate, safe, and sane. when i want a 300mag i get one; don't try to make a 300 savage a 30-06 or a 30-06 an ultramag. i also like minimizing as far as possible the number of different powders i use. oddly almost everything i load for Re15/19 will handle with an occasional Re22 (or the equivalents in hodgdon or dupont). this round tho is enough an oddball i'm having to branch out.

I am using IMR 4064 in my 8x57 loadings for both 150 and 175gr.

I have been using RL-15 for 300 Savage, 308 and 303 British.

I am trying IMR 4064 in 300 Savage for the first time. I got some of the 180gr Nosler Partition protected points for another rifle and decided to test them out in the Savage also. I am able to load the 180gr Partitions in the 300 Savage case without compressing the powder if I use IMR 4064.

Hanloader Magazine #209 has some pretty good real world data for the 300 Savage if you can find a copy.

Someone from this site was kind enough to send me a copy of the .300 Sav article from Handloader #209. If you'll PM me your address, I'll be glad to send you a copy.
