Both Speer and Hornaday caution against using their upper end loads in older rifles. Does anyone load for a Remington 722, if so what loads do you use?

The warning is there for people using rifles built on '96 and older mausers, to keep a safe pressure limit. The M722 is the basically the same as a modern M700.

BTW, I used IMR 4350 for the 115 and 117 gr. bullets and IMR 4831 with the 100 gr. bullets when I had my Ruger M77RL .257 Roberts.

I think that the loads that are listed in newer reloading manuals list a +p loading that would be for modern "strong" guns. Also, I seem to remeber an piece in shooting times or handloader that Mike Venturo killed that last name, but he had loads for the 257 Bob that were up to 50-52ooo cup or so and if I recall, it had lots of higher pressure loads listed. Perhaps someone can recall this better than I.

Was in Handloader magazine - previous issue - wish I had bought it - it had some downright high performance loads for the 257.

My favorite load was a case stuffed full of H4831 and a 100 grain bullet. I used a drop tube for the powder. 3200 fps. Obvioulsy this is high pressure load. It gave 25-06 performance. These load were hot but gave no obvious pressure signs. It has been 25 years since my .257 Roberts days. Work up slowly and be carefull.

I used to have a 722, during my teen age years. My favorite load was a case stuffed full of H4831 and a 100 grain bullet. I used a drop tube for the powder. 3200 fps. Funny thing, the deer and pigs never seemed to die any faster with the hot loads than the bug hole accurate ones. Quite the contrary. A moderate load of IMR 4064 gave sub MOA accuracy. No flash, no tremendious blast, I did not flinch, the bullet hit right where I wanted, I collected the game. Something to think about.

I personally would not bat an eye at loading the .257 Roberts to .270 Win pressures in the 722 action with +P brass. That's what it was built to do.
