Does anyone know what bullet Federal is utilizing in their 175gr. RN for the 7x57mm Mauser? Hornady bullet??

Also, for those that have used it on game larger than white tail, how did it perform?

Curious as it's shooting very well in my youngest boys M70 (under 1/2" consistently).

Don't know what Federal puts in theirs but I use Hornaday's.
They make a real loud slapping,smacking sound don't they.

Almost certainly Hornady since no one else's bullet looks like it. My M77 Ruger is not very good with any of my handloads with lighter bullets - especially 140 grain boat tails. However the Federal 175 RN factory ammo shoots into about 3/4"!!!!

I too think the bullet utilized by Federal is the Hornady Interlock. Sure looks like it...

I've always heard the 175gr. Hornady is a very tough bullet, and is ideal for penetration at 7x57mm velocities, however, it doesn't open and expand well on light deer sized game unless bone is struck.

I've never shot the 175gr but I can vouch that the Horn 154gr round nosed bullet from a 7x57 will flat slap a 100# deer on it's ass. I never recovered any bullets so I don't know how they looked. Little finger sized holes going in and maybe 1" coming out.

The Federal factory load is actually pretty stout. I have just assumed they use the Hornady 175. I bought up all the Hornady 175 grain component bullets in the area about the time copper started going through the ceiling a few years ago.

Some of the old shops had stock with dust and a price tag of about $12.50. It is a fine, fine bullet out of a 7x57, especially if you use the hotter loads in the latest speer manual. Think I use about 51 grains of RL 22 out of my Ruger No. 1.

You can definitely hear the impact on a deer. It is my favorite deer load. The Federal loading runs about 2400 fps.

I load the 175 gr Hornady RN in my M95 sporterized Chilean Mauser. It does seem to be the same as loaded in Federal factory but, like the others, I do not know for sure.

I use H4831 in WW 7x57 cases. I load them to 2400 fps in the 22" barrel. I also measure the psi in that rifle via an Oehler M43. The psi(m43) of that load is at the SAAMI MAP (Maximum Average Pressure) for that cartridge and under the CIP MAP. It is a very accurate and deadly load and one I recommend for elk and bears. A lighter 139 - 154 gr bullet is better suited for deer and antelope.

Factory Remington and Winchester 175 gr loads are a tudge less velocity (2250 - 2390 fps) but pretty much the same psi (51,000). Milsurp 174 gr FMJs run higher psi with less velocity. Milsurp spitzer FMJs generally run a considerably higher psi, especially Chilean 7x57 which was made and used in this rifle.

All my psi measurements are based on modern piezo electronic transducers so please no apples and oranges comparisons using the old CUP psi figures. According to CIP (European proof house) these older Mauser cartridges were designed around 39,000+ BAR MAPs. That's the ammunition not the strength of the actions. 39,000 BARs converts to 56,565 psi (modern piezo measurement). SAAMI holds the 7x57 down to 51,000 psi.

I inquired with Federal earlier in the week. I was informed the 175gr. RN SP Federal utilizes for their 7x57mm ammunition is indeed Hornady.
