3031 as a replacement for Norma 201?

I noticed the difficulty of finding Norma 201 in the states. I have a load for my 45 Blaser for a 350 Grain partition on top of 45 grains of Norma 201.

I looked on quite a few charts and noticed that the 3031 is a little faster burning than the Norma 201.

Would this be safe to exchange for and maybe drop back 5% to develope a safe load?

Any suggestions on how to make this work? Or sources for Norma 201?

only if you use 3031 load data then I would reduce 10% and work up the load. Even though they are simular in burn rate do not consider it safe.
your load of 45 grs n201 is safe in that lot of powder only.

I didn't see Reloader 7 listed in the same part of the burn chart as Norma 201. I will look into it though, thanks!

Norma propellants are and were usually double based propellant.

So you'll find a correlation between N201's charge weights to generate a cetain velocity with one specific bullet, but
with another bullet or a greatly redued load it'll be way off....

IMR-3031 is a single based nitrocellulose propellant
N201 probably like most normal propellants has a signifiant ammount of Nitroglycerine in it's composition

Frankly I think N201 behaves more like H322 than it does IMR-3031, but I wouldn't go ahead and use H322 data either...

Did you discover a supply of N201 that you need to use up?
Or did you have a really good load that you can no longer get N201?

If it's the former get some older loading manuals off of Ebay
(Hornady third edition?)

If the reason you are asking is the former I'd suggest working up some loads with RL12 or mabey RL10 or H322.

Gove someone the particulars of bullet weight, diameter, case capacity and OAL and someone can run a load calculation for you.
I can't, I'm all papar manuals here....

While my gun knowledge is superb I am still learning about this reloading thing.

The only data I have for the 45 Blaser is with Norma 201.

I am awaiting my cases and dies to ship so I can fill them full of water and see how much they hold. If it is similar to the 450 Marlin I will use similar data.

I just don't want the damn thing pushing that R93 bolt into my right eye.

FWIW Nosler lists a load for the 45-70 in "Strong actions"
(Including the modern 1895) @35,000CUP for the 300gr Partition bullet

I don't know offhand how the case capacity of the 45Blaser
compares to the 45-70, but I can say that for cartridges of that class IMR-4198 and RL7 are about ideal.
