Came across 4 lbs of W748 at a price I couldn't refuse. Now I'm looking for an application. It is listed as a powder for both the .22-250 Rem and .204 Ruger. Two cals that I love to tinker with.

Surprising to me, most loads I am finding list a mag primer. I have 1000's of 205m and 210m primers but very few 215s and no small rifle mag primers.

Why the recommendation for a mag primer with W748 in non mag calibers? Is it even worth trying small and large rifle primers?

I use CCI and Remingting Small Rifle primers in my 223 w/748 even though mags were listed. It didn't make a difference. It is worth a try - as always, work up to any max load.

There are folks that believe that the ball powders fill the case so completely that a Magnum primer should be used with any use of ball powder.

I use magnum primers in cases larger than .257 Roberts when using ball powders......and I asure you that I'm really not sure at all it's necessary.

I further assure you that ball powders in cases as large as 220 Swift are fully functional with conventional primers.

Interesting. Thanks for the response.

Speer lists 38gr of W748 as the max with their 52gr MHPBT. I worked up to 37.5 gr and I’m not even close to case capacity.

I’m going to start with a large rifle primer. If it doesn’t group, then I’ll give the mag primers a try.

Concur with the above. I've been using 748 with the .223, .22-250, 7-30 Waters, and .30-30. In every case I used standard Winchester primers and have had no problems. Accuracy has been great too.
