Im going to buy my first bottle for the .35 rem (my dies come tommorow hopefully) so its getting close to finally starting reloading. Ive been thinking about getting some Hodgdon H-Varget. H-Varget powder is the second fastest for 200gr bullets, and it fills the case the most (usable is 2.85cc, it fills it to 2.63cc). So i think for starting out this would be a good choice since i can really see how my loads compare before seating the bullet. For 180gr bullets, it fills it to 2.7cc. and is the second fasted. All these is for the starting loads, not the max loads. Has anyone used H-Varget powder before? Is this a good choice for a first time reloader'spowder.

Well, from your post I am assuming that you are talking about a max load filling the case? Forget about max...start at the lower end and work-up. For 200's: N-133 From 31.0 grains to 35.0 grains Remington 9-1/2 Primer For 180's: IMR-3031 From 34.0 grains to 38.5 grains Remington 9-1/2 Primer

Thanks, and the velocities are max load (im definatly not doin max loading for now),but the volume is starting load. I have the modern reloading guide and info off hodgdons' website, so i know my starting point. I was just seeing if this is a good choice of powder since it is decent speed, and fills the case up.

Hey P.T., Varget is an absolutely outstanding Powder in a lot of cartridges. But I've never tried it in a 35Rem. Many years ago my Elders used H4895 in their 35Rem rifles with 200gr RN bullets. I grew up dragging out their 1-shot kills. So, when I started loading 35Rems, I always used H4895. And I've used it with both the 180gr FP Speer, various 200gr RNs and can recommend it. Of course, each rifle is unique and yours might actually prefer Varget. Only way to know is to try it and see for yourself.

Thanks a lot Hot Core. I talked with the fireams guru at the lab here, and he recommended H4895 also. SO i am going to pick up some of each(H4895, and Varget) and give them a try. Thanks again.

P.T., I have always used IMR-3031 at 35 grain under a 200 grain RN in my Marlin 336SC. I never chronographed it, but it has taken many deer in the thick woods I used to hunt. It has always been my go to, good luck rifle. It was my first real hunting rifle after graduating college. Sounds familiar.....and that's how I wound up with 40 different types of powder on my loading bench..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
Sounds familiar.....and that's how I wound up with 40 different types of powder on my loading bench.....
haha, that may become an issue eventually, right now i dont have the accuracy with iron sights to really get good groups,so im not reloading for perfect accuracy, but once i really start loading for accuracy (esp when i get a 30-06 later on) I can see nightmares with numbers and letters when i sleep, haha.

Truer words were never spoken. Just looked and I don't have "quite" that many. --- Hey P.T., If you don't have a Speer Manual you might want to get one, or at least look at the 35Rem data in one at the Gun Store. They have a Load using H4895 with a 158gr 0.357" Pistol bullet that should be fun to plink around with in your rifle. I have a 444Mar that I'm carrying a bit when I can that is a lot of fun to mess with using the Iron Sights. And I'd expect the Lyman Manual to have some Loads for you that use Lead 0.357" Bullets. That is a great thing about rifles that can use Pistol bullets - lots of inexpensive shooting available if you want to try it. Best of luck to you.
