I just got two new Browning A-bolts and need some ammo. I have checked on all the websites I have bookmarked and no one has ammo or brass. Cabelas listed ammo "in stock" but the email told me it was back-ordered to 3/30/2014.

I hate having a new gun that has never been fired - I have to get some brass or ammo for these guns!

Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

Look for either 6mm Rem or 7x57. Neck up or down, trim and load.
Either can be used to overcome your Jones.

Nooo!! 6mm doesnt work in a 257 R. The headspace is different and it results in instant case seperation. Dont ask me how I know that.. Whistling

Sure would be nice to get the damn anti-gunners out of office.

If you take the proper steps in converting 6mm Rem to .257 Roberts it works just fine. Feel free to ask me how I know that. Wink

I made a lot of .257 from .30-06 brass in the relative poverty of my youth. It's a lot of work, but results in perfectly usable cases (As would .25-06, .270, .280, or 8x57 for that matter.)

I do this often - easiest conversion is 7x57 Rem or Norma brass to 257 Roberts or 257 AI.

Well I finally have some factory loaded ammo. I had to travel 300 miles round trip ($50 in gas) to get it and it cost a bunch but I now have 40 rounds to break in the bores, sight in the scopes, and see how the factory ammo shoots. The ammo is Remington 117 Express core-lokt. It is round nose ammo but it will do fine for the first 20 rounds through each rifle.

I have another 40 rounds that shipped yesterday and should be here before Friday (the first day that the weather looks decent).

I used to make it from 25-06; worked fine and for some reason I did not have to turn the necks; they weren't too thick. You could make it from readily available 30-06 or 270 but you might have to ream or turn the necks or might not. . That might be easier than driving 300 miles for it.

I have considered making it from more common brass but as long as I can get the brass - loaded or not - I would rather stay with the correct headstamp. I'm less likely to make mistakes if I keep it simple.

Yes, I know, and I do keep my ammo in separate boxes with load details on and in the boxes. If I continue to have this much trouble getting ammo I may change my mind.
