Hello All,

Would anyone mind running some pressure estimations in Quickload for me?

I'm trying to get a feel for the pressures of the following:

.44 magnum
17.0-19.0 gr. of 2400 powder
310gr. GC Hardcast bullet
Regular primer.

Or, put another way...

How much 2400 = roughly 36k-38k psi?

Regards,

Robert

I can tell you that 17gr under a 310grLFPGC gets me 1200fps in my 7 1/2" Bisley Hunter.

Is your bullet pure lead, 10-1, 20-1, Linotype, or just wheel weights? Heat treated or just plain? It all makes a difference. There is no way QL can predict a load or pressure for that.

Prediction is a NFW!

Not sure. The bullet is a Laser Cast TrueShot GC hardcast bullet. Does that help?

QL cannot exactely predict which pressure a certain reloading combination can give, neither can exactely predict the V/0, because too many variables are involved and each rifle/pistol is a different story; it can rather give "an useful estimation", "a range" and those data should be cross-checked with 1 or more reloading manuals and, possibly, a chronograph. For instance, 2 days ago I used QL to estimate the behaviour of the SNPE SP12 powder, sold in the USA as Ramshot Magnum, in my freshly rebarreled 25-06 rifle. QL predictions were quite optimistic but, fortunately, I found a Ramshot reloading sheet that suggested me to reduce by 2 grains my increasing test loads range; despite this, the brass with the hottest load showed a small shining mark from the ejector slot and the bolt was slightly sticky to open. In short, QL is a remarkable, very useful and funny software, that must be used wisely.

Quickload has a very hard time predicting straight walled cases. Quickload can only make a prediction based on mathematics and science. A prediction these days is an “untested fact” (just ask a man made global warming advocate) or “a guess”.

Because of the science, QL doesn’t make wild-ass guesses but guesses just the same.

Because of the straight walls of the 44 Magnum, the unknown hardness of the bullet, and all the other variables, you would probably get about the same information by asking a shaman to “roll the bones” and tell you what the spirits say about it. Wink
