I am getting started working up loads for my 25-06 AI. I have Ramshot Magnum, IMR 7828, and RL-22 here to work with and was wondering whether I should use standard or Magnum primers?

Is there a reloading book that your going off of for the powder charges and stuff?

Most people use standard primers, while some use mag primers with heavy charges of ball powder. You do need to get a good reloading manual that gives you that information and much more. Red C. Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

right now you better shoot what you can get ahold to. i dont think you will need a mag. primer. but if you have some you can use them. i use some mag. primers in my 7MM-08 it does not hurt a thing. about the only time you NEED a mag primer. is in the large mag stuff. or in the REAL cold weather with ball powder.

The only manual I have that includes the 25-06 AI is the Sierra. I have seen a few "internet loads" that seem off the charts hot. I plan to start with standard 25-06 loads and work up. The Magnum is the only ball powder I will use.

Doesn't matter which. Just use the same consistently. For the quarter cent apiece difference, I'd pick the standards.

The best way is to work each with each powder and see what is the most accurate. There will be a slight change in powder amount for each primer for the sweet spot. You will not see anything drastic.

Thanks for all the replies. I was rummaging around in my stuff and found 1k of cci br2 primers that I've had for....a long time. Think I'll pop a few tomorrow and make sure they still work. If so I think I'll use them. I also found about 30 fire forming loads that I had loaded a while back. 100 gr. Speer HP behind 59 gr. RL-22 in new WW cases.

with RL22 of slower (RL25) I strongly recommend a magnum primer. all the comments about ball powders "needing" the hotter primer apply to RL propellants because they use generally the same chemistry but the propellants is in bigger pieces. I never loaded RL22 in any of my 25-06's (I don't have a 25-06 at this time), BUT... in the 30-06 with 165's RL22 works real well I have however discovered that in cold temperatures particularly with the first round of the group the first round from a COLD rifle often doesn't "go" right... Velocity is low, and there is a horrendous muzzle flash and partially unburned propellant fragments This "problem" was absolutely resolved by switching to Magum primers to light it all up. In point of fact the ONLY magnum large rifle primers I use are Federal 215's, because I bought 5000 of them (in addition to the one's I already had) just before the great primer scare of '92 RL propellants are dual based stick propellants and bring more energy late in the combustion cycle, they tend to be somewhat more progressive That being said I was never happy with the results of IMR4831 in the 25-06 and RL22 is actually slower than IMR4831. My brother's 270win OTOH won't shoot anything else half as well as it did 130gr partitions in front of a max charge of RL22 with a fed 215. I'd REALLY recommend RL19 or IMR4350 in the 25-06 instead of the slower propellants you mentioned. AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! There are never any clear cut answers to such questions, opinions only. Try both and see which works better. MY opinion is the standard primner will do a little better, overall.

i'm just asking because my experience is limited, but every reloading manual i have says to use standard primers unless magnum primers are called for in the recipe; so my question is, why use magnums unless called for?
