I was wondering if it is possible to exceed safe levels in the 30/06 with H4831and a 200 grain bullet?

I don't think you can get enough powder in the case to cause problems, but I have to ask to find out!

Two of my -06's function best with a case full... case full of IMR 4350, that is. 58.5 grains is about the limit with 165 grain Ballistic Tips. That's all I can put in 'em with out a drop tube, or some other trick.

Mike,

I tend to find a full case in an '06 with H 4831 is 66 grains. I have loaded 180 grain bullets in Winchester cases with the 66 grains and have not had any problems.

( this is way over book listing campers, so If you try it, work up and if you blow up your gun it is your fault, as all guns are different)

I can vouch for 64 grains of H 4831 with a 200 grain bullet. I have not chronographed it, but have with 61.5 grains and that was pretty much at 2825 fps in a 24 inch barrel. Several shots broke 2900 in a 26 inch barreled Enfield P 17.

Use your heads out there tho folks.

Seafire -- that's got to be with fired and neck-sized brass in a pretty big chamber. My '06 won't hold that much 4831, even with significant compression.

At any rate, whether you can overload an '06 with 4831 and 200 grain bullets will depend on the individual rifle, as well as which 4831 you use. With the old original surplus 4831 (which was almost as slow as IMR 7828), I'd say it's unlikely. With H-4831, especially the SC version which will pack a little tighter and is slightly faster than the surplus version, it's possible. And with IMR 4831 (so close to 4350 as to be nearly indistinguishable), it's somewhat likely.

I'm gonna say no. If you fill to the bottom of the neck, I'm gonna say for sure no. Just remember, when you put the hammer down on this load, it ain't your mama's .243. [Big Grin]

I have found H4831SC is an excellent general-purpose powder in the .30-06 for bullets above 165 grains.

The pressures are mellow, even when using compressed loads. It also gives superb accuracy.

You won't be disappointed.

I use 62 grains of H4831sc in winchester cases that are neck sized with 200 grain nosler partitions loaded to col 3.32". This is the absolute compression limit for this load. I don't think my chamber is overly large. The problem is I only get 2600fps in a 22" barrel. I have no problems reaching 2800fps with 180 partitions. I guess its the luck of the draw.

StoneCreek:

Stoney, you make some excellent points. Just for clarification's sake. The brass is Winchester '06, full length sized. The rifles are Winchester Model 70,( New Type, not pre 64)
factory rifle, and a P 17 Enfield, also Winchester Manufacture, 1918.

I do use New Manufactured H4831SC and I do use a drop tube for the funnel ( Lee Set).

Have never used the Non Short Cut H 4831.
