Hi,

Without doing my research I bought some 335gr. Rainier plated bullets for my .500 S&W and now realize they really aren't made to be pushed that fast.

I'm not finding loads to stay under the 1200fps Rainier recommends. Anybody have any cast bullet loads or something that slow they could recommend?

Thanks,
Kyler

I would be curious to know how comfortable the 500 S&W is to shoot with "slow" loads.

On a thread on THR, one shooter was describing his frustration in getting his money out of his 500 S&W. Seems he had fired maybe 20 rounds from his hand cannon, and that was enough "fun" for him, for life. And apparently, he was not alone, and the price of used 500 S&W's was a lot less than what you would expect for a almost new pistol.

I was wondering if downloading the thing might make it shootable. I personnally hate 44 Magnum level recoil, so I wonder if this beastie can be reloaded to a low recoil level.

Kyler, you may want to check out the August 2007 issue of Shooting Times. It has a tear out page of loads for the .500 S&W Magnum.

These loads were developed in a 2 inch Taurus Model 500. They used Hornady brass and Large Pistol primers.

It shows any mumber of loads of 950 to 1200 fps in that short barrel. Might be of some interest.

Thanks for the tips on the loads, I'll check into them.

Honestly I'm not looking for a low recoil load but rather a way to use the plated bullets I purchased (they say not to push them over 1200fps).

I've carried and regularly shot several different 3" .44's with full house loads for the last 10 years and am switching to a 329PD, all of which have worse recoil than the standard loads in a .500 S&W in my opinion.

Thanks,
Kyler
