we have a .243, .260, 7-08, 308, and 35.. all based on the .308 win. why hasnt someone came up with a .277-08 or 270-08 insteed of all of this WSM stuff. I think it would have been a good round. because i really like my 260 and 7-08.

Hey Vines, One of these other folks will know for sure, but I believe there is a Wildcat 270Redding, which is just what you suggested.

Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.

Ackley did it and called it, quite simply, the .270/.308.

From his book;

"This is a very fine efficient .270 cartridge made by simply necking the common .308 Winchester to .270. It resembles the .270 Savage, but being slightly larger, it provides somewhat higher velocities, and these velocities compare very favorably with the standard .270 Winchester, and a multitude of the larger .270 cartridges, including the Magnums. The .308 necked down to 7mm is quite similar to the .270 version, but it handles the heavier bullets at very satisfactory velocities."

Probably because we really don't need another short necked, short magazined short throated POS rifle. JMHO stirroger

Let's see, what 308 wildcats - real or imagined - haven't been domesticated yet...17-08, 20-08, 22-08, 23-08, 25-08 (25 Souper), 270-08 (270 Redding), 8mm-08, 9.3mm-08, and just maybe a 10mm-08. Not sure any of them of anything do anything not already being done by a half dozen cartridges at least. Somebody get Boomstick over here. Cool

Where did you get the idea that he would build it with a M70 or Mouser? Wink

Probably because there is so little diff. between a 260 & a 7-08, why bother? I think the only reason the 260 was dev. was many thought the 243 was just not quite enough for deer size game. A better move thna making a 25-08. bewildered

The US Ordnance Dept thought of it before Ackley or anyone else. In fact, it was one of the cartridges tested as part of the "Light Rifle" program leading to the adoption of the 7.62x51 NATO.

I have one in my collection dated 1953, a full year before the adoption of the 30 caliber. It is called the Cal 27 for Light Rifle and is loaded with a 102 grain bullet, a "homologue", which means it has the dimensional proportions of the M2 bullet.

And, before you ask, they also tested 18, 22, and 25 calibers. The Brits tested the 28 caliber. Warren Page designed his 240 Page on the same arsenal brass prior to 1954.

So, there is really nothing new, is there?
