SEMA eNews Vol. 12, No. 43 California Bans Lead Wheel Weightsin Law & OrderGovernment AffairsWTC
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law legislation which bans the manufacture, sale and use of lead wheel weights in California effective January 1, 2010. The automakers have agreed to stop using the weights as original equipment, and the three major manufacturers of wheel weights in the United States will stop distributing lead weights in California by the end of 2009.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched a voluntary nationwide initiative in 2008 and began a rulemaking process this summer which may eventually translate into a mandatory federal ban. The weights have been banned in the European Union since 2005.
At issue is concern that the weights fall off tires and become environmental hazards or are contaminants in the metal recycling process. In the environment, the weights may be ground into fine dust particles and turn into lead oxides, hydroxides or bicarbonates. Lead particles and chemical combinations also pose the risk of contaminating surface and ground water supplies

SR4759Elemental lead is very non-reactive.
A place I once worked had the same lead anodes in the sulfuric acid anodizing bath for decades.

vipLeave it to California! Well I guess we can't have all that lead contaminating all their fruits and nuts now, can we?

Don't laugh. As Snowwolfe mentioned, the EPA started this bullshit in 2008. And unfortunately, many states follow the lead of California in some issues, especially environmental. Your turn might be coming.

Ol` JoeI believe the auto manufactures have been going to zinc weights for some time now. It doesn`t suprise me Kaliforia is banning lead, wheel wgts, they already have banned lead bullets in 1/2 the state.

kcstottThe big problem won't be getting lead but using it. We already have a California Condor lead free zone in California that completely restricts the possession of lead bullets in ammunition while in the area.
It won't be long before you won't be able to use your ammo unless it is lead free.

The Feds banned lead shot for waterfowl a long time ago, there's no more lead based paint or leaded gasoline, not to mention the lead free solder requirement for plumbing applications. Shit, there's groups out there wanting to ban lead fishing weights. It's only the beginning of the end if the special interest groups get their way.

Have you thought about the long terms implications of that?
Short term, the shooting industry will probably switch to copper bullets as the technology is already out there.
Once those become widely established, the anti''s will start making a noise about how harmful copper is when it becomes embedded in trees. They will also aggitate the logging/timbre industry about the potential damage done to saw blades and other (expensive) machinery when it hits a copper projectile.
Now I know these claims against copper are pretty groundless, but so is the present ones against lead bullets; in reality both are just stratergies to attack shooting/hunting...

Peter

kcstottOh yeah just like banning guns in general.
How many jobs will that effect?
Gun companies, Steel, Wood, reloading components, Scopes, sights, binoculars, clothing, ATV's, Etc all depend on the sale of guns and the use of them in the field to support an industry.
These dummies don't understand how wide spread a gun ban would go. Billions of dollars lost, Hundreds of thousands of jobs lost.
They really have no clue

Oh, they have a clue alright! It's just that they don't care. They know that their mindless rants against guns and gun related items will keep them awash in cash from ignorant liberal simpletons. They don't know how to hold down a real job.

MikeNI was supposed to get the cleaning of an old range backstop that had been used for the past 30 year. I had planned on salvaging and recycling the lead. As near as I can figure 5 to 10 tons. Well EPA found out about it and put a stop to it, now it will be cleaned up, put in containers, and the will bury it in a hazmat waste dump where it will be safe.

They are attacking powder in the same way, using groundless claims. A local firechief won't allow a gunshop to carry 1lb containers of powder. Reason? "They are located in a strip plaza".

Was having fun shooting my Vetterli today. 310 grain bullets down range every shot. Asked the fella who supplies me with the bullets to make me up another 500. When I explained about the wheel weights he asked me how old I was. I told him on the far end of 73. He told me he had more than 3 tons of wheel weights and he doubted if I could make a dent in it till I passed on. Seems about right to me.

That's probably a fire code issue. Many of the shops around Socal won;t carry powder either for the same reason. Special powder magazine, etc. It's just easier to mail order the stuff anyway, cheaper too.

Oh I agree, it's stupid, but most codes require a special storage facility for gun powder, but not cleaning fluids or even high octane booze.

KenatiIt just occurred to me that the no lead ban would seriously affect 22 rimfire most of all. Can you imagine the cost of a brick of lead free 22 RF bullets?
I grew up shooting ground squirrels and jackrabbits in the foothills of California, the epicenter of condor country. I owe the most significant part of my ability to shoot a rifle accurately to the early days with a 22 RF. Later in college, the 22 RF pistol took me to two national championships then training and tryouts at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
The point is, if it wasn't for the 22 RF I bet many of us would not be as competent or had as much trigger time as we would have otherwise. Makes me worry about future generations exposure to shooting due to the economics of lead-free ammunition.
Sounds like the antis are getting there way via the back door. Pisses me off!!

I'm sure it's a fire code issue - instituted by IDIOTS.
Don't go making excuses for these assholes and act like it's not an infringement. When you take products off the shelf, it makes them mysterious to the average Joe or average kid coming along. And it makes them easier to demonize. "So dangerous, we can't stock it."

If these assholes had ever seen powder burn, maybe they'd realize how stupid they are.
