I posted a poll on the big game forum and after much deliberation and review of the results from that poll, I have decided to give the Barnes 100 grain TSX a try in my .257 Weatherby Magnum. I have loaded the 115 grain Ballistic Silvertip in the past with IMR 7828 and have gotten good results with accuracy and velocity. With moving to a lighter bullet I am wondering if I should be looking at a different powder. I have three on hand that I think will do, but want to know where the majority of you would start. I am only listing the three I have on hand as money is tight and barnes tsx's are spendy. What would you start with for load development out of the choices?<BR><BR>Thanks.IMR 4831IMR 7828H1000

I had the same thought, but thought I would seek the opinions of others.

I would think that the H1000 would be close in performance to IMR 7828 but to look at Hogdon's data it looks like a dog comparatively. Aren't the two pretty close in burn rate and applicability?

I would like to try the H1000 if I could get decent velocity as I have 6 pounds of it compared to two pounds of 7828.

RL25 and H1000 are close to IMR7828 on the burn rate chart

RL25 is also a fine performance powder for the .257 Weatherby.

I'm not sure but there might be a difference in density and they just can't get enough of the less dense powder in the case.

Burn rate don't always tell the whole story.....

You should try it and work up cautiously and don't be afraid of compressing.....

RL22 has been hard to beat in the .257 Weatherby. I load 72 grains with the 100 TSX, velocity is over 3600 fps, 3 shots in .6 at 100 yards. As always I would ease my way up to that max. or stop when the chrono says 3600. On occasion and with a clean barrel, this load will one hole for three shots, but seems to require a bit of cleaning every 15-20 shots. IMR probably only has one powder for the .257 no. 7828. RL 25 should work, I have some but the RL22 load gives me no reason to test it.

My rifle likes RL-22 for the 115 and 120 grain Nosler Partition and 100 and 115 grain Barnes TSX. It also likes H-1000 for 110 grain Berger. Good shooting.
