I just picked up a nice little marlin 444S 22" micro-groove barrel. i have some IMR4895 and was thinking of getting some pistol bullets for cheap plinking and some varmint fun. I know the Hornady XTP 300gr would be good for the job but I don't want to load to full power. what amount of powder can I use to reach about 1500fps.

Also can someone recommend another inexpesive pistol bullet?

I do that, but I recommend using something faster...

SR 4759 is a great powder... max is like 35 grains.. you don't have to use a compressed load..

I can also tell you that in mine ( owned since 1981), that if you load 44 Rem Mag data into a 444 Marlin case, you will end up with pretty much the same velocity...

another thing.. 44 bullets are about as aerodynamic as a ping pong ball.. slowing them down to about 1700 fps, you down sacrifice but about 10 to 15 yds of point blank range.. and reduce recoil substantially...

I am sure you can handle it, but why have to?

it is also a lot more accurate than any lever action 44 Rem Mag I've ever seen...
