Need help with a hand load for 7mm RM. I used facotry Federal Premium Vital-Shock 160 grain Barnes Triple X ( x bullet ) on an African Safari and performed VERY well. The FPS on this load is 2940 at muzzle. Need to get to that MV.
Any ideas? Took a factory load apart and it looks like some type of fine ball type powder. Anyone know what they use? Anyone have a load
nearing that MV?

I've loaded the 150g Partition w/ 63g IMR 4831 for years. It shoots very well and the books say it should chrono 3100fps. It only clocks 2940 in my Sako .

I haven't loaded the BArnes 160gr in mine but you can get there w/ IMR7828, RL22, RL25, Retumbo or H1000. IMR7828 is my choice, work upto 64gr.

I would be shooting ~ 68 gr of either Re22 or H4831SC and I would be getting ~ 3050 fps with my 26" 7mmRemMag.

There is no way you can look at a powder and tell its composition. Some makers use proprietary powders that we mortals cannot acquire. If you, me and Boogabama could load up ammo just as good as that loaded by Lazzeroni or Weatherby, where would their profits go? I remember a number of years ago some maker said they used two "secret" powders which they spun into the case like the stripes on a barber pole. Was supposed to create high pressures with low burn rates or low pressures with high burn rates-- or somesuch mumbo-jumbo-- all the while creating velocities near celerity. My question is: If it is spun in there at the factory, will it not settle and integrate in transit, ultimately just mixing in a random pattern, leaving you with essentially two mixed powders of unknown chemistry? What the hell good is that? I think it's just marketing hype...

The only two loads that Hodgon lists with 160 grain bullet at over 2900 fps are:

Hodgdon Retumbo 69.5 grains (Compressed) for 2915 fps at 49,900 CUP
and
Winchester Supreme 780 - 65.7 grains for 2948 fps at 58,000 PSI

Clayman..

I shoot the Barnes 160 TSX in my 7mm Rem 700 w/ 26 inch barrel. I have had great luck w/ 63 grs
RL 22 for approx 2900 FPS chronoed.

I had no pressure signs so would assume my rifle could take more if desired.

Might be a good place to start.

Good luck.

I've found a great load for my 7mm Rem Mag/Remington 700 SPS. 160 grain Nosler Accubonds, COL 3.350, 69.0 grains of Retumbo, and Nosler brass. I'm getting 1/2 moa at 200 yds and if I really do my part I've got a couple of 1/4 moa groups at 200 yds. Best of all is the MV average of 2950. My friend and I have tried alot of different loads and the low mv was always an issue. I haven't tried anything else after finding this one. Good luck!

Nosler partions 160 grain IMR 4831 60.grains I stay under 58K PSI if at all possible .

I really like my H870 in one of my 7's however as it's unobtainable I won't list my loads for what I use .

In two weeks weather permitting or not ,I will be testing several different loads with Triple Shocks

So check back in a few weeks and I'll post up here . archer archer archer

Sell it and buy a .300 Win or Weath mag. You can then load them down to that velocity with a 165gr bullet.

Whatever happened to H4831? The old original powder loaded a 160 grain bullet at 65 gr powder and listed at 3000 fps, and shot accurately. Now the same rifle can only handle 63 grains of the new stuff yielding a lower velocity. Anyone else noticed this?

The max book loads for 7mmRemMag can be beat with hot loads in the 7mmMauser.

What does it all mean?
Ignore load books, but for 7mmMag, double ignore.

I've shot a bunch of 140-grain Noslers with 61 grains of H4831, seems easy on my bones and pretty consistent. I haven't lost anything with 140s that I would have killed with a 160.

With 150 grain Partitions, my load is 63.5 grains of H-4831SC, using Federal 210M primers.
Accuracy is 3 shots at 100 yards into a 1/2" group.
