I'm about to load some 9,3x62 with the 293 grains TUG.

The only load data on this particularly load that I have is the Brenneke load of 54,9 grains of vithavoiry N140 and a RWS 5341 primer for 2200 fps!

I would like to get closer to the RWS factory load fo app. 2400 fps.

What is your load exsperience?

What would I gain if I used a RWS 5333 Magnum primer instead?

What would I gain if I used Vithavoriy N540 instead?

Is the 2400 fps from RWS reallistic with the ehavy 293 grains bullet? I've never chrono a TUg load from RWS out of the 9,3mm but the .300 win RWS load I've checked sure was realiable!

Please share you exsperinces.

Regards

Mads

p.S.

Happy new year

Hey Mads,

Check out the final paragraphs in this article by Ganyana on the African Hunter website:

http://www.african-hunter.com/the_9_3_x_62_mauser.htm

Not anything on reloading with various powders, but an interesting observation on the TUG 293 in RWS factory ammo and appropriate velocity for best penetration.

Also, some discussion on the performance of other bullet weights in the Swift, Woodleigh, and Stewart offerings.

The beginning of the article goes into the details of the history of the 9,3x62 and the excellent Mauser A class rifle, long with the opinions of Pondoro Taylor and George Rushby on the subject.

Hope this helps you in your quest.

Cheers,

Alan

Mads,

Well I haven't used the TUG but here are my observations.

I picked up no real advantage using mag primers even checking by chronoing with rounds from the freezer. Nor did I lose any accuracy advantage. I've settled on WLR as a good hot but non mag primer.

The Brenneke load sounds about on the money, depending on barrel length. The Nosler 286gr partition max load is around 56gr of VVN140 for around 2,300fps with a 26" barrel. (from memory as I'm at the office).I had to go to 58gr to get the same velocity out of my 24" barrel. No pressure signs such as bolt lift etc but pretty flat primers.

You will allmost certainly pick up some velocity with N540 but at the expense of greater barrel wear (probably not a problem in a 9.3x62) and some extra dirt. I would suspect that it's really big advantage is that it will be denser than N140 and so the problem with compressed loads and heavy bullets seated deep will be negated.

I am very suspicious of the 2,400fps figure from RWS even if it is true I really really would not want to fire it!.

I would aim for an accurate 2,250 with VVN140 or 2,300 with N540.However before I bought N540 I would try some VVN135 if I had some lying around. On the face of it it seem too fast but VV think it's the best and so do Nosler.

Mads,
Although I don't have any experience with the 293 grain TUG, I've shot quite a few 286 grain Nosler Partitions. Bullet weight is quite similar, but I don't know the shape or BC of the TUG. Anyway, using a 24" barrelled CZ550, chrono average is 2,440 fps with an extreme spread of around 30 fps. This load is with 59.0 grains of Reloader 15 and WLR primers. No signs of pressure either with a stiff bolt lift or flattened primers. I have not tried to exceed this load since the accuracy is quite good.

I would be surprised if you could not find a load to reach the 2,400 fps barrier.
