I would like to load spitzer bullets in my 92 carbine for single shot use, but I can't seem to get the bullets straight in the case without a bulge. Has anyone any experience with this, good or bad? What dies, bullets, etc., are working?

I've done what you're talking about with the 75 gr. Sierra HP and 4198 powder with good results, probably the best groups my 92 ever shot. Dies were Lyman, circa 1970 production and better quality than they furnish today. Don't recall that I had to do anything out of the ordinary, other than remember not to put any in the magazine.

Somehow your expanding button is too small or the die or both. Mike the the expander button a tell us what it is and we can compare it to our buttons. I would call the die mfg and ask for an exchange. I think RCBS would make it right.

Myself, I would make a bigger button and if it shot stop there. If it overworked the case and still held the bullets tight I might ream out the die.

When we were in High School one of the gang hunted chucks with a 92 saddle ring carbine 25/20 and he used that same 75 Sierra bullet and open sights. He got quite a few chucks. While I got more I had a scoped .222 he did some real hunting.

The dies I'm using are the RCBS Cowboy Action Dies, which RCBS claims have a .001" larger expander ball than the dies for jacketed bullets. They are sending a seater plug for spitzers, I'll see if that doesn't help. One gent told me that the spitzers won't expand on game at the lower velocities. Did your buddy have any problems with the woodchucks? I'm loading Berger's 72 grain Maximum Expansion Factor hollow points.

My 85 year old hunting buddy told me a couple weeks ago that he has left his long barrelled octagon mdl 92 to me in his will. He hopefully will be hunting with me for many years to come. I was thinking about stock pilling components for it in the back of my reloading supplies. I did kill my first deer with it a small 3x3 blacktail many years ago. I haven't reloaded for it before and I don't want to abuse it. It'll only be shot for fun and maybe some digger squirls and jackrabbits. I was thinking hornady 60 grain bullets, winchester brass and rcbs dies. Sujestions would be greatfully accepted.

I have found that the thin necks on the 25-20 are very easily bulged. I slightly flare the mouths with a tapered dowell before seating any bullet. A Lyman M die would also do the trick. I haven't tried single loading the spitzers in my old M53. Will have to check that out.

I haven't shot spitzers from mine, but I do bell the case mouths before I seat my bullets. Mine prefers cast bullets in the 65-85 grain range.
