Hello the campfire:
I was reading an artical this morning about bullet alignment and run-out. In my age befuttled mind, I have forgotten what I know about the bullet alignment. Considering that the throat alines the bullet, and that the barrel bore is smaller than the bullet,, why is a small mis-alignmemt so detrimental to accuracy? Enquiring minds want to know!

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

The further off of true a loaded round is the more off center it will enter the throat. Most people assume that the staighter that the bullet enters the throat the better the accuracy will be.

The chamber can be a lot larger than the loaded round and if the case neck is .005" off center the bullet will enter the throat crooked.

This is the best question I've read in a long long time and thanks Judge for asking it.
IMO it does very little to improve accuracy by making more concentric ammunition. All the gizmos and gadgets are of very little use for a hunting rifle.

One can chase himself up a tree with frustration trying to cure such things as "runout".

If one really wants to be a benchrest shooter then all these finess things can mean real differences as those guys actually measure accuracy to .001" and they need everything they can get.

Further their equipment only vaguely looks like hunting guns and ammunition...it's a total different ballgame.

I fully agree that the huge bulk of "runout" is compensated for by the fact you mentioned...the bullet is channeled to the lands by the throat and not the cartridge case at all.....This also means that turning case necks is of little consequense unless the chamber is made with a tight neck and turning is required to fit.
