Looking for a little more data to go on for my new baby: BLR in 358 Win. Want to use 200 gr. bullets (Hornady sp. or GS Customs), 20 inch barrel. Information, especially with newer powders such as Xterminator, H322, Benchmark, RL10, is, well, scarce. Looking for some starting points. TIA, Dutch.

Oh, excellent, I'll be safe if I stay under 2500. That's exactly the number I was looking for. Many thanks, Dutch.

Dutch,
no offense, but THAT bullet SUCKS in a 358.... i generally run it 2500-2600 in any of my 3 358s... and that bullets EXPLODES worse than a BT on game.

the BEST, and i repeat BEST bullets for generally purpose on the 358 is the sierra 225 gameking, loaded from 2400 to 2500, using win748 powder. highly accurate, and a pretty good bullet, for not being a true permium as measured these days.

the h 200 rN just SUCKS... or, as Ray told me, run it at 2100 and it'll penetrate for miles, because it's designed for the 35 rem

Jeff, thanks for the heads up. I use the spitzer for practice only, they are inexpensive, and they do shoot straight. I will use the 200 Gr. GS Custom for elk. I KNOW they won't break up, and if I ever do get this mythical "Western long shot" I keep reading about, it will open up at lower velocities.

I use the 225 Gameking in my Whelen, but a 200 makes more sense in the smaller 358. Just wish Barnes would make a 200 TSX. Dutch.

The bullet should be matched to the game. I have found that the 180 Speer and 200 gr Silvertip to be outstanding on deer, black bear and other similar game. In no case did a bullet fail to exit and the effect has been outstanding. The velocities of the 180 gr start at 2700 fps and a quick kill at 240 yds was made.

With the 200 gr Silvertip the MV is 2460 and again the performance is outstanding to 200 yds at least.

As to the powder IMR 4198 works fine with the 180's and IMR 3031 with 200 gr bullets. I have not tried the other powders you mentioned but RL 10 is very good with the 180's starting with 48 grs and 46 grs with the 200 gr bullets.

Dutch,
I found that the 225 is the best all around load for the 358... sd is over .25 (the mythical required for north america) the BC is high, and the vel is right on the heels of the 168 grain match bullet, with sim. BC, out of a m14.

the 3-5-8 taught me my first lessons on momentum. A friend has a 193 yard range (195, and it's over the fench) with a 3" thick 12" blind flange (for those that don't know what that is, it's a 12" circle of cold roll steel, 3 inches think) with 2 pieces of angle iron welded to make feet.

300 weatherby would eventually knock it off, 308 took 7 shots, 222 DID NOT do anything but make a pretty glitter when the bullets hit it... 257 weatherby cratered it, like a red rider bb gun into a mud bank..

the 3-5-8 knock it off.... high, low, dead center, at nearly 200 yards... with 225's GK, btw.

What I would LOVE to see is a GOOD round nose at 225

But, i might be whistling in the dark, fellas... but dont run the hornady 200 gr 35's past 2400... they act just like BTs

Dutch, For hunting don`t forget the very accurate North Fork - 200gr bullet! TAC=51grs for 200gr & 52grs for 180gr bullets! AA2015=47grs for 200gr bullet! These loads could be near Max! Safe in my 20" 14 twist M-7ML! 200gr NF over 47grs RL-10x=AV2605 & SD-4 ! All these loads are very accurate in my gun!

ELB, didn't know North Fork made a 200. From the comments, I'd be a little hesitant to use it on elk, but I will add it to my options, in case the GS's don't shoot -- though that hasn't happened yet. Thanks, Dutch.
