Don,

Looking for additional load data for a 416 Taylor (416/458 win.). I will be using Swift A Frames 350 & 400 gr, Nosler 400 gr Partition, Hornady 400 gr RN, Barnes X 300, 350 and 400 gr.and GS custom 330 gr HV and 380 gr FN.

I believe the case capacity is aprox 89-91 grains of water, pressure around 64000 psi
my goal is to reach 2400 fps with 400 grain bullets. The rifle being built will have a 1 in 14 twist and 26" barrel.

I need to find the right powder? I would like to see models using RL15, xmr2015, xmr2494, Imr4320, n550, Imr4064, Varget, H414 and BL-c(2). I use these in my whelen with the RL15 the best choice then N550.

Thank you in advance.

bigdog,

Have you seen Saeed's data at:
http://www.accuratereloading.com/416t.html ??

Quickload says that he was generating 61,623 PSI at 74 grains of RL-15 pushing the 400 gr. Hdy at 2435 fps.

There is no way I'm going to give you load data that exceeds a predicted 60,000 PSI. IMHO you have to leave at least 5% margin, and I usually use 10% (58,0000 PSI). Twisting QuickLoad's model to match Saeed's data (25.5 inch barrel), I find the effective case capacity for the RL15 model to be 98 grains. (This is becoming familiar territory, but it is still a stretch!) Note that bullet retention forces, crimping, and throat length can make a big difference in the peak pressure from these loads.

THESE ARE MAX LOADS, BACK OFF 10% and WORK UP!

For the 400 HDY at 60000PSI,
71.7/IMR4895/2416
74.2/BLC2/2397
68.3/IMR3030/2383
72.9/IMR4320/2381
71.7/RL15/2371 (See Saeed's data)
73.2/AA2520/2371
66.5/Varget/2311 ( see Saeed's data for actual)

350 gr Swift A-Frame at 60,000 PSI
76.7/BLC2 /2565
74.7/RL12/2519
71.1/IMR4895/2494
71.5/Varget/2465
71.1/RL15/2436

400 gr Swift A-Frame at 60,000 PSI
68.7/IMR4895/2385
69.8/RL15/2373
70.4/IMR4320/2366
71.0/BLC2/2366
75.9/H414/2339
68.4/IMR4064/2337

GS Custom 380 gr. FN
73.2/BLC2/2448
69.9/IMR4895/2439
70.2/Varget/2414
71.0/IMR4320/2401
69.9/RL15/2386

GS Custom 330 gr HV
73.8/BLC2/2604
71.2/H335/2586
71.6/RL12/2554
67.1/IMR4895/2474

I am tired after an hour of this, and will take a break. This should get you started. Always trust actuals before models. You owe me actual velocities on any loads you use!
