Got a new fun gun and already getting tired of paying for the jacketed tips. Anyone have any experience with cast bullets and shooting them fast. I need to know what you shoot in terms of bullet weight and how to avoid leading by keeping the speeds within reason.

any help appreciated.

as teens we used to cast up 190 gr gas checked bullets out of wheel weights & load them up behind a full case of 4831 - mainly because it was the cheapest thing we could load in an m1 and have it function well enough to go chase jackrabbits with. we didn't experience much leading at all

The M1 is not the best platform for lead bullets, as the gas system gets fouled easily. Also the operating rod can be damaged with bullets over 170 grains or so. The M1 functions best with loads that duplicate military velocities and pressures, 150 to 170 grains. Evan using the wrong powder can damage one (4350 or similar slow burning powders). The carbine can be loaded with lead.
