Hi everyone! Im new to the forum and wanted to say thanks for having me. Im wanting to find a powder to load for the 308 and 270. I know the Varget shoots well in the 308, but is it good for the 270? Some web sites say yes some say no. Im wanting to buy in bulk and use the same powder in both. Thanks for any info. JJ

Welcome JJ! Do you have reloading manuals? Most manuals will show a most accurate load tested highlighted with an asterisk for every cartridge they show data for. This is a good place to start for loads. Other than that try as many powders you can for the particular bullet you want to use. Pay attention to the rifle twist in the guns you want to choose bullets for. Some will shoot heavy bullets some won't. Buying in bulk is fine, as long as you can use it. I wouldn't commit myself to 8 pounds of powder until I was sure my guns liked it! You may get stuck in the rut of marginal or poor accuracy because you have that one powder. I would buy as many different powders in 1 lb. lots as I could with the money, so you can find what the guns like. Then when you are sure you are keeping the gun, buy a larger lot.

Thanks for the reply....yes, I have looked at numerous manuals. Some refer to varget some dont. I was hoping someone on here has tried it before and could tell me if it shot well. A few sites say it burns to fast to use with the 270? I may have to get a pound and just try it myself. Thanks again, JJ

Varget is not a good powder for the .270 Win. -- it's too fast burning. Try one of the 4350 powders or one of the 4831 powders for the .270. If you can find some, Alliant Reloader 22 is also excellent for the .270. In fact, although some shooters seem to love it, I've never found a use for Varget for any cartridge where there was not something better available than Varget for that usage. "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

Thanks for the info. I agree with you. Most people are saying it is too fast burning. I guess I will just stick with BLC2 for 308 and my H4350 for 270. Thanks again.

I'd much rather burn Varget than BLC2 in the 308/7.62. I also think IMR 4895 is tough to beat in 308. Regarding your 270 Winchester, H4831 and 130 grain bullets go together like apple pie and vanilla ice cream. There is no reason to settle for 2800f/s when 3100f/s is easily attainable, and 3100f/s is how the 270 earned its reputation.
