I been thinking of trying a surplus powder in my 6mm Gibbs. Right now it runs real well on IMR-7828 and loading some IMR 4831 it acts like maybe that powder is a little fast burning for that setup. The bullet is a 100 gr in 26 in barrell. So Has anyone used any surplus powders in high capacity small bore cases with good results? I was thinking on trying some WC860 or WC872 from Jeff Bartlett, but when I saw that the suggestion is to use H870 data to start out with I now have questions. I tried some H870 and got terrible results. And with IMR-4831 acting like its a little fast. WC852 being in the burn rate zone of 4831 makes me leary of spending for a whole jug of it. Any suggestions? Thanks Ray

Ray, Hows does it do with 3031? There's a milsurp that is ~close~ to 3031. 30331 works really well in my 257r,,, jeffe

I shoot a lt of wc844 and 852 the 844 I have seems a lot like h335 the 852 is slower then 4831 I like it the price is right and it is very useful once you have a load delevolped you well not find much differants in them and the more expensive spreads.

Jeff, I have never even considered 3031 in this Gibbs case. I considered it too far down the fast side of burning rate. Actually I've not loaded anything faster than 4831. Looking for that full case and all. P Dog, have you experienced the WC852 being just a tad slower than the 4831 ? Which 4831 were you refenecing to IMR or Hodgon ?

Is MR 8700 too slow? Or maybe it's not even available anymore.

quote:I have some WC-852 that must be the slow variant. I had pretty good luck with it in my 6.5x55 match rifle, so I thought I'd give it a try in my 260. Still working upwards, but 43 grains and a 120gr. bullet isn't even pushing it. Someone else mentioned WC860, and it's my favorite 25-06 powder for launching 120 grain bullets.

Ray, If your rifle likes IMR 7828 then try WC860. WC860 is equal to H870 and is a tad slower than IMR 7828. If you have any reloading data for H870 them you are in luck. I use 78.5 grains of WC860 in my 6.5-300 WSM which is almost a complete case full and it is very accurate. My loads did not start grouping well with WC860 until the case was almost full and I was compressing my loads. WC852 (slow lot) is equal to IMR 4831 and will also suit your needs. I used WC852 in my 6.5-06, while it was a cheap powder to shoot I never found a load I like compared to other powders in my rifle. Note that all WC surplus powders are ball powders and are temperture sensitive. A max load that works great in winter my be too hot for summer time shooting. Safe reloading Russ
