I picked up a box of woodleigh 220 grain round nose weldcores to load for a 300 RUM. I noticed on the box the recommended velocities for this projectile is 1900-2400 fps. I calculate I'll be in the 2900-3000 range. Just wondering if this thing is going to fly apart or what? I emailed woodleigh and did not get much of an answer. They told me "We're pretty sure the animal is going to be dead but we do not know how the bullet will perform.

It may fly apart hehe. I've been thinking of trying some .410 pistol bullets in my modified 405. It would be pushing them around 3000fps or more and the bullets are only made for around 1200fps. Same issue you have (kind of). They may hold together just fine and I really cant think of a way to test. I thought of shooting into a row of gallon water jugs at about 50yds and see what the bullet looks like. If you use enough water jugs (I'd say six or so) and you catch the bullet you can at least get an idea what its doing at max velocity.

Curious if that is velocity at the muzzle or at impact. I have a 358Norma. It shoots factory 250s woodleighs at 2700. I've killed 3 or 4 hogs with it. Range 115Yds and closer. Usually a hole on both sides and a dead hog.

As usual just my $.02

The Woodleigh is bonded & I doubt it will "fly apart" but it may turn almost inside out @ impact vel. over 2400fps. I've only used the 350gr & 400gr/.423. THey perfrom well up to 2400fps. If you want a bullet that holds together for close impact shots w/ your RUM, I would suggest the NorthFork or Swift, Barnes of course.

Woodleigh listed velocities are suggested "impact" velocities. It is forthcoming on Woodleigh's part to publicize suggested impact velocity. Woodleigh has this data on it's website.

I guess I should have used a few better words. I did not really think they would come apart in flight but was more concerned with their on game performance at the increased velocity on moderate sized animals say a waterbuck, kudu, or even maybe something smaller like a bushbuck or an impala.

I think they are covering themselves from the "If it penetrates x inches at 2200fps then it will penetrate x+y inches at 2900 fps" crowd. The point is (presumably) they were designed and tested to perform as desired, within the stated velocity limits, and if you choose to drive the bullets outside those limits, don't complain about bullet performance.

Well using my 358 I have estimated impact velocities on good size hogs from 2622 down to 2456 and performance was great.

Well, at least you got a reply. I have never even been able to get them to reply when I had product questions. Guess that's why So few of the products they make are on my shelf.
