This one should be simple:
1) What do you use to clean/protect your dies?
2) How often do you clean your dies?

CLP and a bore mop

As I reload in batches of 100, I clean the sizing die after each use; the others, not nearly as often.

Remington Brite Bore. It comes in an aerosol can, and I spray the inside of the die. Then I use a wadded paper towel to wipe it out. With the sizing die, I first remove the decapping rod. That too can and should be sprayed and wiped.

The seating die rarely needs cleaning, but the sizing die needs cleaning frequently because case lube accumulates in it.

Do the same --- if your dies have not been cleaned in years first use brake cleaner to hose them out good...

I clean my sizing dies with brake parts (spray)cleaner after every use and wipe the outside off with a slicone cloth. I wipe off the other dies and spray them after 5 or so uses. The sizing die is the one with the built up lube and grit in it. Using WD 40 is kind counterproductive is it not?

Counterproductive....to what...a cheap way to prevent rust? Washes of easily with thinner....I don't get it.

I used to use WD 40 until I found a superior product Boeshield T 9 about 20 years back .

Have been using it ever since for almost any thing inside or out which requires a clean

dry lube and must Work rain or shine . It has yet to fail me !.

I guess that's why Boeing developed their own , as others let them down .

Periodically I'll clean my dies with the spray brake cleaner. I have some old .22 hornet dies that tend to rust a bit. After cleaning them with the break cleaner, I spray them down with light oil.

I put a dab of Flitz on a Q tip and spin the die in the mini lathe, ala Varmint Al:

http://www.varmintal.com/arelo.htm

quote:
POLISH THE DIES.... I polish the inside of my rifle reloading dies. Most die manufacturers leave the die bores smooth but not polished. A polished die will resize with much less axial force than one in the as-received condition. I disassemble them and put a little Flitz on a cotton bore mop held in a drill motor and polish each one for 30 seconds or more at a 300 to 600 rpm speed. Sometimes I have to wrap a paper towel around the swab to get a good fit. Then I clean all the polish out with hot water and dry with a paper towel wrapped around a clean cotton swab. The polishing process does not remove a measurable amount of material, but results in smoother operation, minimizes the scratching or scoring of the brass, and minimizes crumpling problems when I use them while forming wildcat brass.

I did it last night.
I inherited some reloading dies from a guy that died 14 years ago.
These dies are dirty.
It made them look like new inside, in seconds.

I always remove the decapper and wipe the interior out. I use a piece of cotton t shirt wrapped around an old bore brush. The cotton has a little gun oil applied. I keep my dies clean and my cases look great. I buy a lot of used dies and some scratch the brass. These dies are spun polished in an lathe with 400 or 500 grit silicon carbide paper wetted with light gun oil. After a light polish they size cases like new dies.
I have even cleaned up some really badly rusted dies and they worked great.

Primitive, but it worked for me.
I sized some .308s and discoverd the tell tale dents on the shoulder from built up lube.
Then I just unscrewed the decaping pin assmbly ..
Sprayed a bunch of WD 40 in it and pulled a 30 call boresnake through it about ten times.
It worked really well. I spun the die on the braided fabiric part of the snake wiped the excess WD 40.
Clesned up the decaper assembley. Done.

I also use a bit of emery such as 320 grit on a stick and polish them but only when they become tarnished.....I probably don't clean them more than once every five years.....

Polish them up by spraying with automotive cleaners and polish them and them spray them with Lyman spray lube inside and out. Put them back in the boxes and go another five years
