I have been away from shooting and reloading for over a year and a half now.
My brother-in-law calls me from Wisconsin yesterday and tells me he cannot find primers anywhere.
I log on to Midway and sure enough, they have no primers at all except for muzzle loading. All primers are listed as out of stock with no backlogs.
What is going on?
Since I have been in a cave for the past 18 months, what have I missed here? I soon plan on resuming my reloading/shooting activities too.

Roll EyesPerhaps the bad guys won but they did not cause the primer shortage; not now or in 1990. beerroger

H-mmmm, thanks to everyone for their replys, but nbot one of you answered my question.
yes I know we had an election.
Yes I know the Democrats are in full power.
I also know that this did not cause the shortage of powder and primers that I now find.
Perhaps it will in the furture, but not this quick.
I remained baffled.......... pg

perhaps if you restate your question so it isn't misunderstood!

If it's this:

What is going on?

it's simply that a lot of folks are buying the things that are likely to be controlled or outlawed by the Democrats.....and this is causing shortages! Call it hoarding if you like!

This includes anything to do with handguns, "assault" rifles and ammo for the same.

The primer shortage started showing up about 2 years ago.
At first it was only Fed #210 Match primers that were being hoarded.
I bought a few primers then and continued buying a few when convenient until I had plenty. About 6 months ago large rifle primers disappeared almost completely in my area. And so it remains. It is just a reflex to the democrats record on gun control.

A very large dealer I know called it the up arming of the country. He said it is so bad that he cannot get inventory to sell and some of the large distributors don't have inventory for their sales personnel to sell. This is a guy with about 15 to 20 employees that makes his bucks on guns and ammo and sells almost no components.

people are hoarding primers.

the companies are working hard to keep up with demand, but running a little behind.

condescension is annoying.

I was on the Br site later part of 2006 and they just started having problems getting Fed 205m primers. I started about the first part of 2007 picking up primers like you it took me about good part of a year or more to lay enough primers so I didn't get hit with the higher prices. I also picked up some extra brass/bullets/powder. I think the panic buying after the elections took out what was left.

IMHO this shortage has been building for a long timem we use to have one dealer at the gunshows use to sell bullets in bulk from Hornady,Speers and Sierra he stated having problems getting bullets spring/summer of 2008 and by fall he quit. He got his bullet direct so there was no middle man.

Yep, I placed an order in Dec. for pwoder & primers from PV. It didn't get completely filled until the end of Jan. That's pretty much when it all started, the first of the year. People are scared & hoarding. It will end, but I doubt for the rest of the year. Eventually shooters will max. out their credit cards. nilly

I will agree with the folks who say it is hoarding. I spoke with an industry expert who stated that the mfgs. are producing at max capacity WITHOUT adding production staff. They are running at max with what they had already, due to the fact that this spike in sales is temporary.

On another thread a poster weighed in and stated that he worked for the big primer mfg. and they were producing LOTS of primers. It seems to make some sense, as I have seen online suppliers get in a large amount of stock in primers, only to be sold out by the time I get home from work and can attempt to make an order....it's a pain in the ass I can tell you!

Around here it's no problem to find large rifle or large magnum rifle primers. If one goes by the shops on a semi regular basis he will find some eventually.

Small rifle primers, on the other hand, well, they just aren't getting them at the shops that I frequent. Or if they are, they are all sold out within an hour or two of being put on the shelves.
