Has anyone had good luck with 175 bullets out of the 7mm STW? This is a Remington 700 Sendro with a 26 inch barrel. If so would appreciate some powder and bullet choices. This round will be set up for 100 yard for quick kills because adjasent land owner is not a nice person. Thanks for any help. AAdams

If you really want quick kills try the ballistic tip or accubond in the lighter weights. They do more damage to the carcass but most animals drop in their tracks even with lung shots.I personally use the 140gr ballistic tip ahead of imr 7828 in my 7mmstw's and have taken around two dozen of our large bodied canadian whitetails. Not one animal covered 50 yards after being shot.

If the game is whitetail deer the SC game study found that when shot in the shoulder they did not go far but in the lungs it was 40 yds or whatever. Hagel shot the 175 Partition from the 7mm Mashburn Super. One of those in a shoulder would save losing the deer and having to eat those tough shoulder chops. "Roughly half of the deer shot (253 of 493, or 51.3 %) traveled less than 3 yards after being hit or simply dropped in their tracks. Of the instant incapacitation kills, 87.7 % (222/253) were definitely attributable to spinal or shoulder shots. Hit location is not known for the remaining 31 kills. Among the known hit locations, the mean distance traveled for clear spinal hits (52/222, or 23.4 %) was less than 1 yard. For shots that struck the shoulder (170/222, or 76.6 %), the mean distance traveled was 3 yards. Since the scapula lies directly over the neck / back junction it would be all but impossible to hit the shoulder without causing a paralyzing trauma to the spine (despite not directly damaging it) and the probability of causing serious trauma directly to the spine would be very high. I find that the cartridge and bullet used are large factors in how far deer travel after being hit. When I used the 243 and partitions lung shot deer often ran 100yards or more.Deer that my partners shot with 180gr bullets out of the 308win and 30-06 also usually ran a fair distance.Even deer shot with my 7mmstw's and partitions often ran 50 yards or more on occaision. However the combination of high velocity cartridges like my 7mmstw's and rapid expanding bullets such as ballistic tips provided me with much quicker kills even with lung shots. My hunting partners now use 140gr ballistic tips or 150gr scirocco's in their 7mmremmags with similar if not quite as dramatic results.

Come on guys! Get a 338 Win Mag, load up some 210 Noslers at 2900fps and then watch those deer drop! I shot a deer this year with the above load and the deer flipped over on it's back at the shot with 4 feet sticking straight up in the air!

Stub, While I don't personally favor ballistic tips, my experience closely correlates to yours, just that I often use Hornady's in my handloads. Factory Rem CoreLokt Ultra 140's in a 7mmRM will also result in a bang/flop in a lungshot whitetail, I discovered last fall.

I have had instant kills with the 140 gr Partition out of a 7mm RM at short range. I aim for the base of the neck/shoulder junction on easy shots. My old 7mm RM was not loaded all that hot and had a 22' barrel. I might load 160 Partitions or 175's out of a hot loaded STW and aim for that junction. I have shot them from all angles with that shot location. A shot going away is difficult however unless your higher. Maybe better to let that one go or for the deer to turn. I agree with Stubble on the more powerful loads with light bullets in the lungs for deer. The 30-06 class gives rather ordinary results when they are hit there and the 243 can turn into a chase. If your going to use that 7mm cannon at short range then shoot them where I suggested with a strong bullet. For myself it seems like the perfect application to take the .358 from it's case. If that 26" tubed rifle is all that you have then fine. Down the road I would get something like these for hunting at woods ranges. In my opinon they are optimum considering fast stops and being handy along with taking on anything that comes along. These are .358's Join the NRA
