I'm trying to work up a light recoil deer load for a little Rem. Mod. 7 in .308 Win. With the Nosler 125gr ballistic tip and 35.5gr of IMR 4064 the recoil and groups are fine but there's a lot of loose fouling. Any suggestions on a cleaner burning powder?

Need to get the pressure up. I would think something like 3031 would fit the bill. sundog

Try Reloader 7 or one of the 4198s. I've also had good luck for really light loads with 4227. Another powder that has done well in lighter loads for me has been AA 2015.

regards,
Graycg

After thinking about what I said, I shoulda said 3031 or faster. So Graycg is right on. One thing to stay away from in this application is ball powders. They like lots of pressure, and you won't get there in this loading. I'd find the best load density for the velocity you want and start there..., 3031, one of the 4198 or 4227 flavors,... take a pick. It's even possible that one of the [slower] 4895s could work. I'm still leaning toward 3031 for a start point. sundog

dpg06va,

Welcome to the forum!

I have tried the reduced H4895 loads in other cartridges, and am very impressed with the results. You should be able to load them down to 2000 fps if you wish....

Regards, Bill

I believe those Hodgdon Youth loads allow for 5% up or down play in charges. I recently tested these in my 300WinMag with the 130gr Hornady. Best results were with charges right around the recommendation, maybe a half grain higher.

I'll probably test these with the 125gr Ballistic Tip soon. Should be a great little deer round. Good luck.

Work up to 28gr. of 4759. Your rifle may handle more or less. It is clean and should give you close to 2600ft/sec.
