Could someone give me a reasonably educated guess as to velocity for 53 gr H4831 and CCI LR BR primers, with 160 gr Sierra spitzer out of a 22" tube? Rifle is a ruger in 7x57AI

Many thanks

I used to use 54 gr of H4831 behind 154 Hornady in my really long throated Ruger #1 7x57. They clocked 2635 fps from the 22" bbl. I decided H4831 was too slow for about any bullet in the 7x57.

Thank you, H4831 was giving me good accuracy so I went with it.

That load is what I would consider light. Even with 4831 (not my first choice)you are leaving some velocity potential on the table. However if you are satisfied then by all means stay with it.

As usual just my $.02

I have loaded 52.0 of H4831 with a 160 grain bullet in a straight (not AI) 7x57 and got right at 2700 fps chronograph velocity from a 22" barrel. Using the AI case you would likely need a bit more of the same powder to achieve a velocity increase.

Dear WV Blue:

I have not used H4831 in my 7x57 AI, but I've used Reloder 22 (about the same burn rate).

If you PM me, I'll give you some Reloder 22 loads that have worked well, and you can extrapolate.

Sincerely,

Chris Bemis
