jdunlapmo8X57 (.323) load data needed
Hey guys, been a member for a few weeks, but this is my first posting. I am working up some new loads for my Yugo 8x57 and I was hoping someone with quickload can run some numbers for me...here are the stats:
Powder = H414
Bullet = Nosler Ballistic Tip 180grn (.323)
Brass = Rem. 8x57 (.323)
Primer = CCI 200
Collective Overall Length = 3.20"
Barrel Length = 23.5"
I know H414 is a little on the slow side for the 8x57 (I usually load H4895), but I am playing around with it anyway. Looking for a good full case, slightly compressed is OK too. I need some safe starting and max charges for this combo. Thinking 48 start to 53 Max grains, but want to make sure I'm in the safe limts before I pull the trigger. Thanks!
BTW- Headspace is fine in the gun, I am looking for euro spec CUP charges, not the anemic american stuff. Thanks again!!

TCLouisHodgdon's manual lists
170 SPR SP
H414 49.0 2446 53.00 2586
Drop back for the extra bullet weight and creep up on max looking for signs as a good reloader ALWAYS does.
Should be enough to get one started.

jdunlapmoLouis,
Thanks. I always work up slow from the min charge...just wanted to make sure that my start of 48 grains was OK, and wondering how far I might be able to (hopefully) go with it. Sounds like 48 to 53 is about right...thanks!

BigJakeJ1sNosler lists loads for three different powders for that bullet/cartridge, but not H414:

Quickload says:
58.2 gr gives 104.8% case fill, 65,440 psi, 2862 fps
48 gr gives 86.4% case fill, 35,819 psi, 2339 fps
I find that if Quickload says 72,000 psi for a Mauser case head [8mm, .308, etc], I can get away with it at the range, and have 5 shots of no sticky bolt or loose primer pockets. But just barely. I like to hunt with ammo derated to 65,000 psi, to allow for the ammo or chamber getting dirty.

jdunlapmotnekkcc,
Thanks for the help. I pushed it to 54 grains yesterday with no pressure signs, but that was beyond the books, so I was getting nervous. Looks like if I'm careful, I can keep easing up a couple more grains in small increments. Many thanks!
