Anybody got an opinion on the .358 win. I'm thinking about getting my model 70 in rebarreled in it and was wondering what you all thought. Any better ideas, comments etc?

the engineer in me says it and the 708 are the "best" all aroudn north american rounds.

I've built 3, shot about a dozen of them, and like it more than a whelen, due to recoil...

225 gr seirra gamekings, 2500 fps... kill anything

To my mind it's one of those magical calibers - it just always works for me on everything from coyote to big hogs. I am considering using it for backup to my 375 H&H on my next elk hunt. I use 225 Sierra SPBT over IMR 4320 for about 2500 fps using a 23" stainless Shilen barrel. I would like to use 225 gr NBTs, but my Sako AII action is too short. Try it, you'll love it. You never mentioned if you have a long action or short action. If it's long, the Whelen is the way to go. Lou

I added an A&B 358 barrel to my Savage Scout in 7-08, and now can't figure out why i have 20 other rifles...

Another advantage is how well the 358 shoots 357 pistol bullets.

The .358 Winchester is my sentimental favorite game cartridge for hunting in the Northeast USA.

I prefer the 180 gr Speer or 200 gr Silvertip for deer sized game.

The barrels on the 358's that I have are all rather thin walled and none have ever shot great groups. The best may be the M70 and that's a 1.25" gun. I have done more work on the old 99F and now it's maybe a MOA rifle. If I were buying a new barrel it might be a little heavier than the ones here with .65" muzzles. Keep in mind that all of my barrels are factory barrels and none may be all that perfect to say the least.

Some .358's from left to right: 1. 99F, this is my working rifle. It's got dents and old tape on it and is ready to go. 2. Pre 64 Featherweight safe queen 3. My sons 99F. 4. M 77-1 here for a tune up.

Great round. I did a write up on it in the Barnes Manual. I've had one on the small SAKO action, a Model 88 (or two?), a Browning BLR and have used my Buddy's Model 100 auto, done over in .358. A hunter's choice.

And the metric near equivilent, the 9.3x57. 250gr Nosler over 44gr of 3031--very accurate in my Husky. VFR

Lots of wallop for 44 grains of powder, eh? Tough to beat.
