Could I use some Remington 6 1/2 primers in my 9mm? I've got about 3K of these primers and was told they are only good for use in the 22 Hornet, which I don't own.

Thoughts?

They are Remington small rifle primers good in any rifle case that uses small rifle primers.

They well fit a 9mm case but one would expect lots miss fires as the cup is tougher then a small pistiol cup.

I would not use them in a pistol case except for sub gun ammo.

It might not be to hard to find some one to trade for small pistol primers.

If you were close by we could work something out. The cost of shipping alone would kill the deal.

I would use these in my 204 Or 223 but I read that these primers are subject to piercing over 40K psi.

There were a number of threads back in 2008-2009 on various sights stating the same.

There were copies of statements on the Remington site as well as notations on the primer boxes.

As you started this it made me do a search because I have used about 1500 6 1/2 primers in my full Ar15 loads. No issue but I make sure I set my primers deep. I had never seen the issue until today. I went and pulled my 6 1/2 drimers and there is NO RESTRICTIONS" listed on the boxes. I just went over the Remington primer pages and there were no mention of the 223 disclaimer. Until you go to the support sheet. Then a search of 6 1/2 gives the answer to not use them in 223 etc. No reference on the box is scary and I would think asking for a lawsuit.

I just checked my 6 1/2 primers and it states this on the box.

I don't doubt it. Which makes it all the more confusing. Only reference to the intensity issue on the Rem site is under support. My boxes make no reference to it.

Just checked Midway and they have it as a disclaimer on their site.

Just sent an email to Remington asking them the question. Will post if I get an answer.

My rem 61/2 boxs says for center fire rifle

other the standard warning nothing else,

6 1/2 is for low pressure rounds like 32-20 and 25-20 . Even the Hornet mashes them pretty flat.
I blew a primer on purpose in a Hornet though, and the primer did not perforate in a Contender.

Heard back from my email to Remington. Seems they prefer to call the 6 1/2 primer a small pistol primer.

Multiple companies will say that they use 6 1/2 primers for 223 however, our company stance is that we do not and only recommend 7 1/2 small rifle primers 6 1/2 in our opinion is designated as a small pistol primer and not a small rifle primer which the .223 is.

Rem & Winchester who else uses the 6 1/2?

In the past the 6 ½ primer had a notice on the box saying not to use them on cartridges like the 204 223 etc.

However in looking at the box I have in my loading room there is no restriction on the box. Nor could I find a disclaimer on your site.

So simple question can the 6 ½ primer be used in the 223??

So if the 6 1/2 is really their small pistol why do they call it small rifle on their site.

Well the few 100 I have left will be used in pistols and I will not buy another Rem primer is I have a choice. If they don't know what they are selling why would I want to use it????
