Will 300 gr NPs work on deer or is a softer bullet like a 250 gr Sierra warranted?

Definitely don't use a 300 gr. NP as it, being at stupendous magnum velocity, will probably not expand, since at that velocity it won't have time to, and will pencil right through doing very little damage. It's well known that a .375 in. hole in a deer won't do much. The bullet needs to expand to at least .458 diameter to kill deer.

drewhenrytnt300gr partitions will work fine. I prefer 250gr NorthFork softies.

StonecreekActually, the front portion of the Nosler Partition is somewhat softer than the rather hard alloy of the 250 Sierra. Therefore, you might find the Partition a little more expansive on a small deer than the Sierra. I'd agree that the lighter conventional cup-and-cores like the Hornady might be a better choice, but the 260 Partition, which can be driven to 2750 fps or more might be an even better choice.

ramrod340I liked the 260 Accubond in front of some Rl15.

jsl3170looking for a good general purpose bullet for NA applications. this fall will be for cow moose.

Slowpoke SlimMy load for the 300 partition is a max charge of IMR 4350 and a Win or Fed mag primer. I wouldn't worry about the bullet penciling through a deer. Big deal, it's already .375", who cares if it opens.
I also think it would be a great moose load. I've used mine on elk. Never recovered a bullet, they've always exited.
375 H&H and a 300 partition, would take care of anything on this continent, and most things on any continent.

mstarlingAs another poster mentioned, the nose of the partition is intended to open quickly and will do so on s deer sized animal.
Is the 300 gr NP necessary for deer ... not hardly. Will it work? You betcha!

CrazyhorseconsultingI use either 235 grain Barnes or 250 grain Barnes X bullets in my 375 and am well satisfied with the results.
The reaason I like the Barnes out of the 375, is that the bullet is already of a large enough diameter that without any expansion, it will be letting air and fluid out of both holes, which will shut a motor down pretty quickly.
Also, with the Barnes, either the entrance or exit wound, you can eat right up to the hole. I have never been a fan of bullets causing massive wound channels.
Even the rocks don't last forever.
I shot red deer, wild boar and a moufflon sheep with 300 grain factory SP on a driven hunt and it killed them quite dead, although not really quicker than a 30/06.

Remington brass, Federal 215Mag primer, NorthFork 250gr Softie, 68gr H335, I think oal is 3.6". This is safe in my rifle. I could probably go a bit faster. This is yielding just over 2700 fps. It has killed whitetail, skunk, badger, and time

jsl3170I've got about 4000 CCI 250 magnum primers. should work the same?

KabluewyAbout two weeks ago, I finally got around to paying attention to my 375 H&H again. The last few attempts at developing a satisfactory load had not succeeded, and I had set it aside for a while. That while lasted about five years, and in the meanwhile I had grown fond of the 9.3x62 instead.
I had a fresh box of 270gr TSX bullets in .375. The first load, using 4064 was not as accurate as I believed the barrel (PacNor) is capable of. So, I tried H4350 for the first time in this cartridge. Bingo. Slightly compressed load must be the thing. That was almost too easy.
So, now my Win 70 375 H&H is back in service, and sighted in, with a fresh batch of 270gr TSX handloads on the shelf.
If I hunted deer or hogs with it down south, then I would probably look for another bullet. I plan on hunting primarily the Sitka deer, and in places where there are plenty of brown bear, so it's comforting to have a load and bullet that will do the job on a bear if needed. The nice thing is that this load will work for everything in Alaska.

Shot several WT's w/the Accubond and, not surprisingly, it works quite well.

It would seem that a 225 to 235 grain bullet, loaded down to 2300 to 2500 fps.would be totally adequate for deer to 200 yds.
; Modest recoil and tame muzzle blast. Surpasses the 35 Rem by a good bit. JMHO.

Kabluewybartache,
It's a question of accuracy. I agree with what you said, if the rifle is used just for deer and hogs and such down south. I'm planning on keeping my rifle, and useing it for that purpose later when I retire, and hunt more in southern states. So, when the time comes, I'll be back to load development and testing for accuracy again, with lighter bullets, and most likely H4895 powder, because Hodgdon says loads reduced as much as 60% of max are good youth or reduced recoil loads.
I have had good experience with SR 4759 in other cartridges for reduced loads, but I think the pressure will become a problem with that powder before 2300 fps is attained. If 2300 - 2500 fps is the goal, I'm thinking the best choice is H4895, and slightly reduce the charge from max, and mess with it over a cronograph while also testing for accuracy to find the best charge level. That way, you know that pressure (or hang fires) isn't an issue, and it comes back to just seeking accuracy within the velocity goal stated.
In the little bit of experimenting I've done with reduced loads and lighter bullets, I've found that it's relatively easy to find a safe reduced load, using a light for caliber bullet, but finding one that is accurate to boot is the trick. It has been much easier for me to make accurate loads using the average weight for caliber bullets with powder that mostly fills the case, producing pressure just below the max per book or SAAMI. At least that's a good starting place. Testing loads in a rifle known to be accurate gives assurance when testing specialty loads.

BlacktailerThe BC of the 235gr TSX is nothing to write home about. Inside of 200 yards it doesn't matter but if you have to stretch the barrel to 400 yards, the better BC of the 270's should make them shoot flatter and of course deliver more energy. I'm switching to either the 250's or 270's but haven't loaded either yet.

Philh604I have shot several Mule Deer with a .375 H&H
My favorite load is Nosler 260gr partition with
Winchester 760 powder.
Very little meat damage on the off side shoulder.
Not one deer took a step after it was hit.
It is the one I would choose if "I could only have one rifle"

N E 450 No2I have shot several deer with a 375 H&H mag with the Hornady 220gr Flat Point over 60 gr of IMR 3031, and with the 235 Speer bullet over 60 or 64gr of IMR 3031.
I have taken deer from 25 yards to 175 yards with these loads.
Funny, I have shot pigs and several turkeys with full power loads in a 375 H&H but no deer...
