Does anyone out there have any experience useing Matchkings for deer hunting? I would prefer having the accuracy if they would do the job on deer sized game. Thanks Mark H.

This one has been re-hashed here a time or two, but I'll again put in my two cents: The folks at Sierra, who know more about the bullet than anyone here, say "do not use it for hunting." That should be sufficient to sway one away from it. Extensive personal expansion testing indicates sometimes they'll open well while other times, the nose may pinch shut and they'll penetrate like a FMJ. ANd sometimes they'll come violently unglued with minimal impact and, of course, penetrate very little. There is no reason to use them when there are so many BETTER bullets out there. The MatchKings are terrific for punching paper, but they have no use in the game fields. Some will try and tell you otherwise, but let common sense prevail -- and stick to conventional hunting bullets.

While my hunting situation and shooting skills don't require the use of matchkings, I have cussed and discussed Matchkings enough with skilled long range hunters to convince me that they will do the job, as long as you understand that they are not designed to penetrate heavy bone structure. As an experiement, I killed a fairly large wild boar with one shot using MKs, and, while it didn't do all that a perfect bullet(whatever that is) might do, the fact is he was graveyard dead with one shot at about a 100 meters. Saeed killed quite a few head with MKs on his latest hunt, all one shot kills. He didn't prefer them, but his hunting situations do not involve what long range huntes call long range, which sort of begins in the 500 meter area. The real question is, are you skilled enough, that is accurate enough in your placing of shots, to require the use of MKs for their accuracy potential as opposed to other bullets that are less accurate, and have a lower BC, that will likely be better all around hunting bullets? Why don't you, or anyone who is interested, try the shooting contest(rules are listed in this forum under "Contests" section)where you pick a maximum comfort range for you hunting, under the best conditions, using whatever type of rest, bipod, support, that you might use in real time hunting situations. I would think that if you are interested in LR hunting, then you should have as a minimum 400 yds as your current maximum distance, try you skills at the targets at 400, 300, and 200(100%, 75%, and 50% of your maximum comfort range) and tell us how you did. If you have any questions relating to the contest, which is free BTW and designed to teach us all something about our hunting abilities, I or Dave King will be glad to answer them.

Please, for the love of God! Do a search on 'MatchKing' on this forum. Everything you ever wanted to know about the subject, plus another 1300 posts of garbage will be returned. George
