Just curious if anyone here has played w/ any Viht powders in .308 Win? They are supposed to be getting a rep for being clean burning and relative stable, and I've been hearing people locally that shoot HBR rave about N140 shooting little tiny bug holes. I don't think the stuff meters as well as Ramshot powders, though (Just a guess from comparing N133 to Xterminator). I'm entertaining ideas as to something that shoots as well or better than Varget behind a 168 or 175gr SMK, at comparable velocities (for example, w/ a 175gr SMK + 45.0gr Varget, I get ~1/2MOA groups and 2750fps out the muzzle). Something that meters well enough to allow me to throw charges instead of having to weight each one wold be nice, very nice!!

Comments, suggestions?

I use N140 exclusively in my .308. While it doesn't meter as well as some other powders, I still find it more than acceptable. The best load I have is 44g N150 behind a Nosler 168g J4.

Try some, you'll like it.

N140, N140, N140! Far and away the best powder (Reloader 15 is 2nd) I've found for my .308 win 150 and 165 grain loads.

Lapua uses the commercial version of N140 in it's 7.62 Nato factory ammo.

Ditto the other posters on N140. Been meaning to try N540 too. The other powder besides the RL15 that works quite well for me is IMR4064.

What kind of velocities have you been getting from bullets like the 168gr and 175gr SMK? The other candidate is Ramshot Tac, which is supposed to be 'superb for the .308' or some such, and if it's like most Ramshot powders (ball), meters like water.

TIA,

Hello.

I use N 140 for my Sierra MK 150 grs.

I get the best result using 43 grs of N 150 behind the 168 grs Sierra MK. I get 760 m/s with this load. The best three shot I have measured at 100 meter is 10 mm.
(Sorry for the metric use)

My rifle is a standard Rem 700 ADL.

VVN150 is the powder of choice for the heavier bullets in 308 match rifle over here. I doubt you'll get the same velocities as Varget though as it's single base.
