Well today was my first range day of 06 and I was chomping at the bit to get to the range. Spent last night cleaning and prepping two rifles, loading for both and so on. Woke up at 5 am to see a nice steady snow falling and some wind with it.
I drove to the range and got set up and started shooting wind directly in my face and that nice light fluffy snow ( that I never got for deer season). Not the best conditions to shoot for group size but I would be after yotes in weather like this so as they say "practice makes perfect".
The load is what I have been shooting since late aug 05. I know now the rifle is truly broken in and the groups (in spite of the weather) are nothing short of stellar( in my mind anyway). Rifle Rem 700 VSSF bone stock only thing done to it is trigger adjustment.
Well enough excited rambling from me here's the pics

yep 100 yards forgot to put that in too. Another 3 monts of cold weather before it starts to warm up here.

Now is the time to get thos barrels pristine clean and plenty of Test Loads ready to go when the wind calms and warms.
Congratulations on the fine groups.
Thanks
Too bad my 06 was putting all of its bullets 4" high with 2" groups. The load I was shooting was zeroed for 2" high at 100 and was consistantly under 3/4" for 3 shots. I shot it a month ago and it was bang on for 6 groups. Now I got to figure out what the problem is. Never got bumped and was cleaned and stored after my last range trip. Oh well them is the breaks sometimes.
Looking at your top target I see something that is quite common from a clean barrel. If you use a chrony you will see the first and sometimes second round shoot 100 or more fps slower on the spotless barrel. Once fouled a little pressure creates higher velocity thus your group was tighter than you think discarding the fouling round. Today I shot a load of 64.0 grains of powder in my Sendero and I had 4 shots in a .360 group then the 5 shot jumped up a half inch. My next group with 63.0 grains shot higher than my first group and at the same elevation as the last shot of the first group. It is not enough difference to worry about when hunting with a clean barrel unless you are trying to shoot a deers eye out. Anytime you got to the range with a slick barrel and you want to check for a tight group then shoot a couple fouling rounds first. Good Luck

These are the second and third targets of the day The first target ( I have not posted a pic as of yet) was 5 shots to foul the barrel and make sure my rest was set up properly. I can take a pic of the first group from the clean barrel if you like for comparison to the other two.

Minute of ground hog too which is good. I just love blasting ground hogs. Now If I could just find a powder to get top velocity with 60 grain partitions I would be right some happy.
H414 is not going to do what I want the 60's to do. It is killer with 50-55's as the above two targets show (50's) I have IMR 4064 and it works pretty well in the swift and is showing promise in my 06. I have been thinking of IMR4350 as it might help me with the Swift and it is a go to powder for the 06 in 165-200 grainers.
Also means I am going to have to shoot more to figure a new powder out thats pretty hard to take LOL
