Can I make 7X64 cases by firing loaded 280 Remington in a 7X64 rifle?

Some years back I bought 100 Remington cases headstamped 7X64, but were really 280 Remington. 50% of my first loads were misfires, there was too much headspace.

What you can do is shoot a 7mm cast bullet with a light load of fast burning powder, making sure the bullet jams in the lands, eliminating the headspace problem.

Or use 30-06 brass, which is probably cheaper anyway, plus the resizing to 7X64 leaves you a small shoulder on the neck you can headspace against.

Wow, I just read "loaded 280 Remington" in your post. I wouldn't do that, you will get misfires and head seperations for sure.

The case in the middle is a 280 reformed to 7x64 by running it through the die and trimming.

Case on the left is an actual 7x64 case.

Case on the right is the 280 case before trimming.

You can reform 280 cases from NEW stock. No headspace issues. This is what I used until I ran into a banaza of actual 7x64 Rem cases.. 400 or so new
