Hey Lorenzo, Just recently got a 444MAR myself, so I don't have enough experience with it yet to discuss what workes well for me. I can tell you the 270gr Speer Gold Dots shot fairly well with H4198 and the recoil was quite manageable.

However, I just wanted to post and let you know about a strange thing I noticed when looking through some Load Manuals concerning 240gr bullets.

I noticed the 444MAR SAAMI MAX is 44,000cup in one of my Manuals. Opened a good many Manuals and spread them around the floor. Picked up the FREE "IMR Handloader's Guide" and noticed a 240gr bullet Load listed for IMR4227 that reached 44kcups and the velocity was 2030fps. So, it was obviously not the best choice for the 444MAR since many other powders produce better velocity.

Then I picked up a real old Manual from one of the bullet manufacturers and noticed a 240gr bullet load listed using IMR4227 which was over 9gr higher than the load listed by IMR which reached the SAAMI MAX! Haven't tried any loads with IMR4227, so I don't know what it's MAX would be in my rifle. And probably won't.

So, I'd strongly recommend you check multiple sources before you take off loading and shooting. I'll be using Pressure Ring Expansion(PRE) to monitor my Load Development and STOP when I reach the same PRE as I saw in a box of Factory Ammo.

Best of luck to you!

Hot Core,
Interesting point the differences in de reloading manuals, I'll check.
I've an article (I think in a Handloader mag.) about how good where the 270 gr Speer Gold Dots in the 444, in fact, where the favourite hunting bullets for the author of the article, also he reccomends the 250 gr. Nossler Partitions.
Hornady is the only company offering specific rifle bullets for 44 caliber, 265 gr FN.
Thanks and any future information is welcome.
LG

I have been using 44 grains of IMR 4198 and Hornady's 265 grain bullet. I haven't tried any other powders as this was the first I tried and it worked great. I love hunting whitetail with this rifle (so much so, that my 7mm is being neglected). I have taken a buck each year with it and tracking them hasn't been an issue. [Big Grin]

The above loads did not cause any case strech or case head exspansion in my rifles.
Hardcast bullets work very well also and increases in vel is possible.

Hey Tombo, I've got an old K3-C3 Weaver mounted on mine in the standard Weaver base/rings. That makes it real convenient for quickly removing the scope and at low cost.

Had to file an extra cross-slot in the Weaver Base to accomodate the particular spacing on this scope. But, that is easy to do on a Weaver Base.

However, I grew up using "Irons" and do enjoy them. One thing I noticed about this 444MAR is how well it balances and fits in my hand for carrying without the scope on it. Very tempting to leave the scope on only long enough to Develop the Loads.

One of the guys mentioned in another thread that Williams Gun Sights makes Fiber Optic(glow in Low Light) sights that fit it. I might just try a set of them out. Seems like a good sound design concept.
