if I use pistol primers in the 22 hornet can I use the same powder range figures as quoted in the Hornady reloading manual etc it is just that these books say rifle primers, are pistol primers hotter than rifle or rifle hotter than pistol. Many thanks Bob

I would assume the rifle primers are hotter. However the major difference is that the pistol primer is thinner and softer because the pistol[not bolt action ss] has lower force primer strike. For that reason I would not recommend using a pistol primer in a rifle.

Yes, you can use the same powder range. However, I have loaded dozens of combo's for my Hornet using different primers, powder, bullets, cases, c.o.l. etc. I have never had any combination that performed better or flew faster than the following: Please Note, my load is over what most powder books consider maximum. This works good for me but DO NOT start there. DO NOT 40gr V-Max 13.4gr lil'gun WSR Primer Winchester Brass

I've been using small pistol primers in my .22 Hornet for quite some time, now. As a matter of fact, it's probably the very first accuracy improvement I found. After testing a variety of rifle & pistol primers, my Ruger liked Federal #100 small pistol primers best. The next great improvement in accuracy I found was Hodgdon's Lil'Gun powder. I e-mailed Hodgdon about it, and they informed me that you can't fit enough Lil'Gun into a Hornet case to generate dangerous pressures. About the most I can fit into a Winchester case is 13.2 grains. Hodgdon also advised me that Lil'gun performs best when it's not compressed. Hope this helps... Regards, George.
