I found a pretty good quantity of the old Remington 30 cal 180 grain bronze point bullets. My -06 really seems to like them with 56 grains of 4350. Anyone out there that remembers these and can give me some perfomance data on elk size game?

I shot lots of them I found that that come apart fast. The point is driven into the core causeing them to expand quickly.

Those things leave huge exit holes on deer. I tried them with my 270 and they made such big holes there wasnt much left to eat. Smiler

They was the original "ballistic tips" from Remington. Nosler (and later Hornady) made it as good as it is today (using polycarbonate). It's use on some premiums works very well.

Remington used it to make their bullets open faster and many of these act like varmint bullets on big game.

I'd find something else for elk but wouldn't hesitate to use it for deer.

Will blow the crapola out of deer. My experience is use the biggest, strongest thing you have in you safe for elk. They aren't much on dying.

when I was a Kid, I found out the hard way that Pa. deer were shot at close range and my 180gr. core-loked went right through and the deer walked 75 to 100 yd. to die. twice, another hunter got to "my" deer before I did. - nutz - I tried 150 gr. bronze points and the deer went 3' STRAIGHT DOWN !!!! Currently, I'm 58 and have over 600 deer to my credit [most of them control kills} and NEVER had one go more than a few ft. using the 150 gr. bp's. I load them myself to about 2750 fps w/ IMR4350 and hope that I won't run out of supplies. I've seen ballistic tips in 180 do a good job on deer also, but I'd opt for a partition bullet for elk.

I've "blown the crappola" out of a lot of deer with them (130 gr .277). Very true statement but it still beats "wounding the crappola" out of them. They are a very deadly bullet out to extended ranges.

I gotta remeber that one, 390ish. That's about the best way to put it I've heard in a long time Cool

Excellet load the 56.0 of IMR 4350 with 180 BP in the 30-06. The bullets are a little frigile on game and ten to open up quickly, the same bullet in the 308 win performs much better. The old Win 180gr Silvertip was much better bullet.

I once made the mistake of trying to drive one quartering thru a smallish deer going away.

Not recommended. There are far better bullets.
