Just wondering if people have good luck with there .308's and bullets like the 125 gr Nosler BT and the speer 130 gr Hollow point.

Do they get good accuracy and how do they perform on thin skinned game ??

Wondering if they will shoot good in a heavy barrelled .308 cz.

Yes they shoot extremely accurately, but I haven't tried them on game (whitetails) from a .308 Win. I have used the BT's in the 7.62 X 39 and been very happy, but that doesn't help now does it? Hopefully there are a few more worthy souls who have attempted this.

I've used them on coyotes and feral goats with reasonable success. For whacking coyotes at close range I have used the 130 grainers intended for the 30-30. They do a good job when they hit skeletal structure. A good varmint bullet also is the Speer 130 grain hollow points. I also use the 110 grain Speer.
To be honest, I shoot whatever light bullet is available on sale in the 308 and like the results.

Had been using both bullets in T/C Contender carbines (.30-30 cal) for my grandsons. Worked great on mule deer. When a .308 meandered into the gun cabinet, used those bullets there also. I loaded for accuracy, not top velocity. The Nosler seemed to be the tougher of the two bullets in all past kills.

Thanks folks,

I have heard that the speer 130 gr Hollow Point is an awsome varmint bullet...............how explosive is it compared to Nosler BT's I have shot a fair bit of game with a Nosler 165 gr BT out of my 30/06 and it performs well, just wondering if the 125 gr will be more exposive or does the speer 130 gr take the cake.

.308 Win performs excellent with a 130gr GS Custom HV. At 3200fps they are very accurate without causing a lot of meat damage.

Will hunt again with these in July this year - will report back.

PC:

I have not played with the 130s, but have the 125 Ballistic Tips. I found best accuracy with Rl7 and IMR 4198 when testing it for a friends 308 in a Savage heavy barrel.

Nosler recommended RL 7 in their load manuals until the last one with RL 7 in the 30/06.. I tried it and it was a tack driver so I looked no further after that.

I can only speak in terms of my own rifle. It's a Browning Micro-medallion in .308Win. It only weighs 6.0 lbs. and has a thin 20" barrel and a 1 in 12" twist. I gave up on the 180gr. bullets. My best results come from the Nosler 125gr. Bal.Tip and the Sierra 150gr. HPBT. The rifle groups .55" (5 at 100yds. with either but so far that's about it. It's a finicky little beggar. Best wishes.

Thanks for the hlp folks.....................I suppose recoil would be down with the 125 gr Nosler BT in a heavy barrelled rifle out of the .308 in comparison to a light weight 30/06 with 180's.

My Blaser does not like the 125 gr. BT a lot but a Ruger 77 Mk.2 shoots them very well; only tried some RL12 I still had. The bullet is quite deadly on roe deer and smaller whitetail, it does however destroy more meat, especially when hitting a bone.

My 308 shoots the 130 grain Speer HP better than anything else. After using it on coyotes I figure it to be a destructive deer bullet and recommend not hitting the shoulder.

Rick,

you are not the first person whom has said that the 130 gr speer is destructive, what size exits are you getting on coyotes and what speeds are you driving them at ??

Near 3000 fps and huge, sometimes 6 inches.

I built a .308 on a small ring mauser '98 and a Douglas 1-10 barrel and used the 125 BTs. Accuracy was very good and deer died same as using the 150 grain bullets.
I really liked the light recoil but that was then......today I want to see pass thrus for exit wound trails.

I no longer have that .308 but in my .30-06 I now use premium bullets in the 180 and over range. I wouldn't hesitate to go to the 125 BTs again for coyotes and such.

I had a VSSF 308 I traded for the VSSF-II in 204 that would drive the tacks on the target with the 125 TNT and 52 gs W-748

I would not reccomend then on anything bigger than acoyote,
