I'm thinking of using a Hornady SST 165 gr, bullet in a .308 for deer hunting. Does any have any input about these bullets?

Hi, I'm sorta wondering the same thing. I just loaded up some 154gr. SST's for my 7mag. I am wondering how they will work on whitetails. Any information, or experiences are greatly appreciated. If they seem to be accurate for me, im gunna buy some 165gr. for my dad's 308. Ryan

i loaded some 130 gr.hornady sst in 270 cal. for my hunting friend. he shot an 8 point whitetale at 440 yards this past weekend. he said the deer jumped up and fell on it's tracks. i really was very impressed by that bullet. it was loaded with 60 gr. of h4831, wlr primers and seated at 3.280 inch. 5 shots at .78 inch

In my 7STW the SST's shoot just as good as Nosler Ballistic Tips. Although early rumors claimed that the SST bullet was constructed heavier than the Nosler B-Tip's, in actual field tests they seem to perform quite similarly.
They are both great bullets for shooting long distances at thin skin game. IMO

I have used both the 165's and 150's in my .308 and never could get them to shoot very good. I have used the v-max bullets with great success,(which they resemble), but have been disappointed in the SST's. I have settled on the 165gr Sierra hpbt Gameking, which seems to be just about perfect for whitetails in the .308, and they deffinitely shoot...ol blue

I have shot them for the past 2 seasons in my 280. In that time I have taken 2 mule deer bucks and a cow elk with them. I shoot the 139 gr. in the 280 but could not get them to shoot well in my girl friends 7mm-08 (I hunted elk with it this year), other wise I would have used them again this year on the elk hunt. Depending on what the draw brings I will try them in my 25-06 in 117gr. for deer and/or cow elk and if by chance I draw another bull tag I will try them in 154gr. in my 280. They seem to shoot well in my 280 but not in her gun, but then again not much does shoot well in her picky little rifle. John

If you still have a substantial quantity left of each weight, I'd consider throwing you a few bucks and paying shipping for them. I'd like to try both weights in my Striker without having to blow money for full boxes of each.

I have not used the 30 cal SST, but have shot a lot of the 6.5 cal SST. They shoot extremely well, but I don't care for their performance on game, course, I am NOT a fan of polymer tipped bullets.

Sorry Russ. They have already been passed out to several shooting buddies who wanted to try them. They have had mixed results as well. Spare bullets don't last long around this bunch. [Big Grin] ...ol blue

I've used the 150's in my 308, 165's in the 300 Win Mag, and 180's in the '06. All of my guns like them, I'd recommend them on light game such as deer and antelope. Definately not for elk, bear etc., they seem to expand pretty violently although all the shots the last two years were at under 200 yards. All were pass throughs with very large exit wounds.
